When I drove my car, the last time i started it I noticed that the headlights were dim, same with the dash lights. The engine was idling rough and as i gain RPM it would smooth out and run better. Also the CD player would only work at higher RPM. When I got home I turned off my car and tried to start it again. It will not crank and when I turn the key to the RUN position the dash lights will dim. I think it is my alternator due to the symptoms, please help me confirm this or look n the right direction. Thank you
SOURCE: 1996 Subaru Legacy No Power At All
Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
SOURCE: '91 Subaru: dash & running lights won't turn on with headlights
This is a problewm I have been researching. On the 91 Loyale
there are two headlight relays. The relay for the left headlight
also controls the instrument lights and the running lights. If
the right relay is working and the left is not, the left headlight will
be dim because of a back electrical path through the high beam
indicator light on the dash, but the instrument and running lights will
be out. I have been trying to find out where Subaru put these
relays, but three Subaru service departments have been no help.
One dealer's service department told me to remove the large bezel
around the instrument panel. I did and the relays weren't
there. Lots of luck.
