Are you sure that it is gone? make sure the all the bushing on the transmission are good it maybe that it is not able to go all the way in gear. If you do need to take it out get a good manual "Bentley" are the best it will show you the inside of the transmission too. Haynes are also good but not for working on the transmission it self

I have 1996 vw jetta 2.0 and my reverse keep slipping out and will not stay in reverse..would I have to replace my whole transmission? by the way its stick shift

usually a sign that that gear set is starting to go out or has already, standard transmissions CAN be rebuilt, but it's usually easier to have a used working one put in place instead. good luck to you. does it pop out of gear?

What could my problem be if i have a 97 5 speed jetta and every time i put it in reverse it wants to pop out of gear

if you pull into a parking spot by turning into it, there may be bound up tension in tranny from the differential. mine hates to go into reverse unless i pull through or straight in to a spot.

My gear shift has a problem going back into 1st gear. The clutch is fine, a friend told me it could be the shift bearing need replacing. What or where could I look at to see the diagram of how the bearings...

Well the is no such thing as a shift bearing associated with a VW Jetta. Alot of VW 020 5 speeds won't let it shift into first gear until you are going under ten miles an hour or so. I don't know if it's a design feature so you won't put it in first at a high speed and over rev the motor, or what for sure. I have a Scirocco 16v and a Jetta GLI 16v, all have the same transmission as the 1993-98 Jetta, they both do the same thing. Does the shifter lever have any "play" in it? There are a few bushings for the shifter and the linkage going to the transmission, that do wear out and will cause it to be hard to shift into gear.

Reverse on my 97 volkswagen jetta

your transmission does not have a synchronized reverse gear. it is an easy fix you just have to remove the transmission (i can do it in about an hour on a hoist) and remove the cover closest to the left side of the vehicle. there you will see that the reverse idler gear is stripped. replace it. clean up the metal shavings and change the trans fluid.

Will a 1996 VW jetta tranny match up with 1989-88 volkswagen jetta

Yes. You'll need to swap your old speedo cable and the back up light switch is different. Also the 96 transmission uses the same clutch disc as the MK2 16v, which is different from the 8v disc, it's the number of splines on the input shaft. I'm putting a 95 Jetta 5 speed into my 1986 Scirocco. Make sure you replace the throw out bearing and the clutch rod seal and bushing in the end of the input shaft.

Jumps when I pull away first thing in the morning, no problem when warm (1999 Jetta GL)

the same thing happend to my 1996 jetta trek. when u put it in reverse to start off anywhere its perfectly fine. but when u put it into drive it stalls for a few seconds than jumps.
The transmission is going to go out on you anyday.
mine blew on me about a month when this started happening to me.
i was driving and the car just randomly went into neutral, tried all the gears and all i had was reverse.
BLOWN!

took it to 2 different places to get it fixed, 1st place asked $3500, 2nd place asked $2500.
too much money so we had a family friend put a rebuilt tranny in for $1600.
