Try to unplug the mass air flow meter. The mass air flow meter is atached to the air filter housing on the left of the engine bay at the front edge (left side when sitting in the drivers seat). It will be a somewhat flat 5 or 6 pin connector that mounts to the air box on one side and goes to the black air intake tube that goes down to the back of the engine.

Do it with the key off of course. With the mass air flow meter unplugged start the car and see if it will idle. if it does the mass air flow meter is bad. If the car will still not run then there is a good chance the Eletronic Throttle Module (ETM) is failing. The ETM is under an extended waranty from Volvo for 10 years or 200,000 miles.

I would suggest taking it to a garage or directly to the dealer.

Of course there are numerous other things it could be, but the Mass Air Flow Meter and the ETM are the most likely.

hope this helps.

2002 xc70 when going from park to drive can feel a **** into gear , no other signs of slippage in other gears or while driving . The car has been faithfully serviced and the transmission fluid changed

I feel you should go to a reputable mechanic. Ask for him to check it out. this could be a serious problem but maybe not. Get it checked before you lose all drive power.

Car died on me the other day. tried to restart

It seems to me as though you have a fuel pump problem. Very common problem in these type vans. The fuel pump units on these come as an assembly inside the fuel tank. Might sound a bit silly to you but a lot of times you can take a hammer or something and tap the tank from under neith and it will start for a few minutes. As far as the security system a lot of them are designed to disable the vehicle from getting spark however some do disable the fuel pump as well but not after a few miles it will happen instantly. Good Luck swiftautorepairs.com

Starter

I dont think your problem is the starter i think its the alternator, which is a dog of a job to change. Simple way to check is leave the engine tick over with your front lights on, look at your lights while someone revs the engine, the lights should get brighter if not then 100% certain its the alternator. I build these engines and trust me, take it to you LOCAL garage not the dealer(to costly) its hard to get to, but the local garage will be a lot cheaper and you will get the same result. hope it works for you(let me know) good luck matt
