On the odd occasion say every tenth time it just won't start..almost like the imobilizer is switched on....it does eventually fire up and drives good...also twice now the yellow water light has come on and i have breifly lost power whilst driving then all returns to normal ?? any ideas

if so it sounds like the end clutch has died in the auto and you will need to go to a auto specialist.
check you auto oil level first and go from there

how about does it loose power when accelerating all the time ? if so you might check that fuel filter first .. I always start with the simple least expensive item ..

check for voltage at the small start wire on the starter when cranking the engine--you will need someone help. If there is no voltage you may have a bad neutral safety switch ,which is on the trany shifter.you have an automatic trans i assume.
If so try putting in neutral when cranking.

sounds like your catalitic converter is becoming plugged with oil resadue and it will start to loose power in the near future. the smell you smell is the cat. getting hot.
