I recently bought a voyager 2002 Diesel CRD2.5, Its giving out occasionally some sudden smoke from under rear passenger door, where there is an exhaust like pipe which is going towards the center of the engine. This is not continuous and is occasional and after quite a while after engine starts and not when the engine is cold. Also there is some whistle noise after engine switch-off. I did panic, if I had been ditched. Please help. This happens when the engine is warm. I see no smoke in the main exhaust, nor any reversing oil in the Main engine oil cap. What is this for?? Please help..
This is the Diesel Cabin Heater. It will only come on when it is cold and comes on automatically when you start the car. If you do a short journey you will often see smoke coming out and occasionally hear some noise. It can continue to run for a few minutes. There are no controls for it but you will see a yellow light on the dashboard next to the right hand indicator light. It will only operate if it is cold and you have more than 100-120 miles of fuel left in the tank.
SOURCE: smoke from a side pipe
i think this the what they called the breather.
some cars are equipped with a pipe from the top cylinder head cover down to the side of the engine to blow straight down. some are used to go up against the air cleaner.
if it is blowing smoke and it is probably oily now, it would only indicate that there is already oil exhaust in your top cylinder head cover. could be a leaky valve guide seal.
watch your oil level. it may be consuming oil more than it should. could be a ring job too.
tnx 4 using fixya,

It means that the pre heat is in operation. It is a system that burns diesel to create heat to warm up engine quicker so that warm air comes into car sooner. The smoke is the exhaust gasses from the system and normally the whistleing and smoke stops when engine reaches running temperature or on short journeys approx 1 minute after engine is turned off
During summer when no heat is required and air con is on cooling it should not light even when starting from cold
hope this helps

Hello! Back-up lights are controlled by a relay. Under hood is the "Power Distribution Box"; Open hinged lid and locate back-up lights relay. Remove and replace. You may notice that relay is melted; They are well known for this.
You can purchase a Haynes repair manual at most auto part stores for around $15
