Maybe the spring is broken on the lever

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2013

Thanks. Is it dangerous to drive if it is a broken spring?

either you have the wrong key,or try turning the steering wheel to the right all the way, then turn key, this usually happens when you park the vehicle and the wheels are turned, then the steering wheel locks hard

SOURCE: play in the steering wheel column after position adjustment

When they did the alignment it's possible that they used a tool that locks the steering wheel straight while it's on the alignment rack.If they put too much pressure on the wheel when they used the steering wheel seat lock tool it may have stressed you tilt lock mech causing it not to lock where you want it.Hope this helps

Try jerking the wheel to one side or the other while turning the key. This should free it.

Does the steering wheel lock on a manual transmission 2000 LS1 saturn

Almost all modern cars have a locking steering column. The type of gearbox doesn't matter as the steering is a totally separate system on the car. Remove the ignition key and try to turn the steering wheel. You should get a firm "click". If no click the mechanism on the steering column will need to be checked.

2002 2.2L engin 4 cylinder Pontiac grand am steering wheel don't lock after driving car. in park position and remove the keys. Steering wheel moves freely?? It's it the ignition switch going bad??

The ignition lock includes the steering wheel lock. It's possible that it just needs lubrication, or that the lock part has broken. In either case, taking the covers off the steering column sounds like your next move.

1987cadallic deville steeringwheel

Hi,

Usually, vehicles with tilt adjust steering, have a small lever just under the steering wheel column. Pulling this lever out, unlocks the wheel. Pushing lever back in, locks the wheel.

Have a look for a lever of this type and once you find it, have your Dad hold the steering wheel at his preferred position, then push the locking lever back up, to lock the wheel in place.

Let me know if you resolve this.....

Cheers,

2003 honda accord/ key wont turn, steering wheel is locked

To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal.

My steering wheel has locked and my key won't turn in the column, and of course, I cannot go anywhere. Hopefully you have a suggestion for a single woman of 55 years old that I can do myself. I am...

no there is no cheap nor easy fix, the steering column will have to come apart and the anti-theft contraption attached to the ignition switch which holds the steering column fixed will have to be replaced. there is a nice video of a fellow doing this over on youtube.com, good luck finding the parts.

Steerin wheel is locked and won't turn when engin is on

If the steering wheel is completely immovable, then something is jamming it. You'll need to pull the column covers and look under the dash.

If the steering wheel is very hard to turn, then your power steering is not working. Check the steering pump belt (could be broken) and check the steering fluid level.

My steering wheel is locked and I can turn the key. I've tried working the steering wheel back and forth and I've even jacked the car up to relieve tension and still nothing. any ideas?

Somebody is going to have to take the steering column down and see what the issue is. The steering column is mechanically connected to the lock cylinder as an anti-theft provision.

My key won;t turn in the ignition> The wheel

Try this -
Turn the steering wheel HARD - in the same direction the wheels are pointing - have a strong person do this - while you try to turn the key WITH the foot on the brake and the car in park or neutral.
This releases the pressure on the steering column.

Please let me know if this workd

Saturn vue ignition key won't turn

It was very likely that the problem turning the key was due to the steering column lock mechanism. Sometimes when you lock the steering wheel, if you the mechanism will bind up, making it difficult to unlock the ignition with the key. Often when this happens, you will be parked on a hill with your wheels agains a curb or some such item. Once you turn the wheel hard to the right (or left), the pressure is released on the locking mechanism, and the key will turn easily. This is a similar situation to what can happen in an automatic if you park on a hill without the parking brake.
try doing this:
pop the off the circle piece around the ignition and the holster cover under the steering wheel.
that ought to work.
