How can you tell the fuel pump is going out

I have been driving and notice the rpm is rather low on this car. About 10 minutes down the road the car starts jerking and slowing down and will not take acceleration and the rpm slowly decreases as it comes to a stop. I've changed the fuel filter. Don't know what else it could be.

Sounds more like a clogged catalytic converter or exhaust than a bad fuel pump.

SOURCE: 1994 ford ranger extended cab 6 cyl fuel injected 2 wheel drive automatic

This year of ranger had a few flaws, In one case, a break power booster was robbing the vacumm, you can test this by plugging it off and seeing the differance, but you will have limited brakes. This model year had a problem with a vacuum leak on the manifold. You can check these in many ways, but please don't use starting fluid. The rear of the manifold usually on the drivers side where it seals to the block.
Also, in 2 other cases a cracked head has gave me the same problem. It is caused from a loss of vacuum.

I have the same car. So far no problems with the Transmision. I had the Trans oil change out every 60 K Sure sounds like you need to get the Transmision checked. Is the fault light on. I have invested ina fault code reader sure is worth it.
Good luck.  Vilmos

Shouldn't cost much for 10 minutes work to test fuel pressure & confirm pump condition, but do it when vehicle 's been running for a while, long enough for pump to get heated up.

SOURCE: Taurus stalls while slowing down (low RPM)

Most likely Idle air control valve fault. Usually wont set a code unless it has a short or unplugged. There are some test that can be performed with a high end scanner but with out the data not much you can do.

Engine dies

if it shuts off while driving down the road. and restarts after 10 minutes, its usually a bad crank sensor that does this. it messes up timing and shuts off fuel supply.

How To Test The Fuel Pump 1990 2000 3 0L Ford Taurus
You are on the right track in replacing the fuel filter. Not enough fuel is getting to the engine. It could be a number of other things ... bad fuel pump or dirty injectors to name a couple. The link shows how to check fuel pressure ... which would tell you if the things like the pump are bad.
Might try some fuel additive injector cleaner to the gas tank to see if things improve ... relatively easy.
If it is the fuel pump or other fuel supply problems ... those are harder to fix

Van dies after driving 3 to 10 miles

It very well could be the fuel pump, alot of time when they are going bad they will do that. If the check engine light stays on while running that would indicate a sensor is bad or maybe just unpluged. you can have a pressure test preformed on your vans fuel system which would tell if fuel pump is bad or not.. If check engine light does not stay on, i would bet it is the fuel pump.

Engine is not ticking over at the correct RPM

first try using redexe fuel additive (a full bottle to 5gallons)to clean injectors/fuel pump.
your car has a fuel cutoff valve, saves fuel when coasting(over 1800 revs,if you put car in nuetral going down hill you use fuel,so you are wasting fuel in neutral.but you have read the handbook cos it tells you in there.......

I think you may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. What this does it tell the computer that the fuel has been brought to the correct pressure for the fuel injectors. If this sensor is bad it will not tell the pump when and if it has to stop or pump more when the engine is running.

Engine dying on me

clean the MAF sensor first, then replace the pump. Could also be the cam sensor going in the distributor. Check under cap and rotor for brown dust. If present replace the distributor.

My s-10 will all of a sudden die after driving down the road for a while. After a few minutes it will start again

Your fuel pump may be going bad. If the fuel filter is dirty, it will restrict the flow of gas and heat up the fuel pump causing it stop working till it cools down. Change the fuel filter first and see if the fixes the problem, also have Auto Zone check for any DTC codes just in case if it's something else other then a bad filter or fuel pump. Good luck and keep me posted.
