No warning signs or previous problems with shifting into higher gear till all of a sudden. vehicle would not shift into higher gear from 2-3 rpms. engine mearly raced but wouldnt shift higher gear. i have had engine light on for some time as local auto shop indicated that it was just a sensor that had no significant issues with engine running properly. could this be the issue with the engine light? something simple ? or did my darn transmission go out at 120,000 miles.? please advise...

Both are possible but from your description it sounds like the truck is in limp home mode. You need to put a scanner on it and see if any codes are set. Then repair the code and reset it then see what happens.

It sounds like it may be an electrical problem. Maybe a problem with the TCM, or a sensor.

SOURCE: 2001 Yukon XL SLT 4 speed Auto Transmission shift problem!

Sam,

I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.

I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.

Good Luck

SOURCE: 2004 YUKON XL DENALI, new throttle messed up delayed shift points

I recently had a low engine power on my 2003 Denali. The check engine light came on and I couldn't go above 40 mph. I took it in the next morning but by this time the check engine light had gone off. The mechanic had just recently seen the same problem in another Denali in which they changed the battery and had no problems since. I also decided to have them change out my battery and I have not had the problem since either. I would stay away from the dealership if I were you, and always get a second opinion. Most smaller shops wont charge for a diagnostic where the dealership will charge at least 80 just to tell you what might be wrong and that will only work if you have a warning light on at the time.

2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali won't shift into 3rd but shifts into all other gears. What is the problem please?

Question edited for clarity and spelling 'wat' to what and 'heard' to gears.

You need a transmission specialist or an auto-electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer to diagnose which sensor or module has failed. The test is done as you drive the vehicle and it records the live data.

Shift but won't go into gear just revs
https://www.transmissionrepaircostguide.com/topic/shift-but-wont-go-into-gear-just-revs/

I have had vehicles where the speed sensor, MAF, MAP and throttle body did not let them shift as they should but the vehicle did shift. I have put several links above. Just to make sure if you have check engine light find out the code. Make sure you check transmission fluid with engine on and in park, emergency brake on at normal operating temperature. ( May sound bad but I have had to tell people above 30 about this and they said it was the first they heard of it). I will say the thing which stands out to me is check shifter cable. Check fuses. I did see a link which suggested brakes locked up but I assume the truck is not even trying to move.

Shifting into higher gear problems with 2004 yukon xl

The shift solenoids may not be getting the correct signals from the transmission control module . Read the codes to see if it's the solenoids or the module.

When trans. is warm after extended driving the up shifts are very hard. This only happens during extended driving periods. Around town everything shifts fine.

Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS. Good luck Auto Zone or Parts Source has this part and can be replaced with in 20 min. Both parts store will have the step by step instructions and i believe the cost is around $65.00 for the TPS which is better then a transmission replacement.
