When a crankshaft sensor has failed or is failing, certain timing problems will arise in engine function. The engine may start normally in some cases, but will cut off after a few minutes (or seconds) of operation. More than likely the engine will be unable to start at all. Since the crankshaft sensor is responsible for engine timing, the driver may experience engine backfire or irregular rpm function, if the vehicleMy 1998 for escort wierd problem with idling - icon1.png starts at all.

The IAC valve is usually the problem with the 1.9 Escorts ,causing a very poor engine idle at a stop. It is located on the side of the throttle body .

When you turn the key on does the check engine light come on? If not it may be burned out. It sounds like a MAP sensor or an O2 sensor is bad. I would suggest taking it to autozone as they do free diagnostic and seeing if a code comes up. If it is a sensor it should, if not it may be the idle sensor not reading right in the ECU. More than likely it is one of the sensors though.

i will check idle speed sensor, most likely this is the problem, and the fuel consumption problem can be related to O2 sensor which makes the car idle very badly, so i suggest you check both
thank you
good luck

SOURCE: Ford Taurus: rough idle in drive and reverse

it could be that the tick over is two slow in brive,,,
set it up to tickover at 850,,950 rpm (in drive)
or it could be a gear box fult like the drive plate has a crack in it,,,letting the torque converter slap about,,,
chech tick over first,,, bont adjust tick over in gear unless the brakes are held hard on,,,

Hi , i have a 1995 Escort with 1.9 4 cyl engine , at cold start the engine revs ok but as it get warmer it start to idle rought and die , with a scantool the o2 sensor always reed lean at idle , after checking fuel pressure , air mass meter , EGR valve , and potential vacuum leak at intake and hoses , its the PCV valve that give me that problem , as i remove the pipe with the valve there was a whissle noise comming from it , when i block the valve at its tip the whissle noise stop the engine revs smooter and the o2 reads normal , i replace the PCV and its idling good .

Could bad maf sensor and bad idle air valve have vehicle stall then hard to start for awhile and cuts off after 10 minutes of driving

I would also suspect the ignition module. They tend to work ok for a few minutes when they are cold, then fail once they warm up. If you wait awhile for the ICM to cool down, it will work as well as it can until it warms up again. A code scanner is your best friend to know where to start looking, and to perform tests and log data.

98 escort high idle

check for vaccuum leaks.. try spraying brake cleaner around the lines and see if it changes anything with the idle spped.. if it sucks in some it will chug while you spray it.. That helps locate a leak..

Hi Kevin, Sounds like you have a problem with the cold start idle control. That unit is fitted onto the throttle body. If that is the unit you've replaced, the next place to look is the air flow sensor. That's the unit fitted between the air filter housing and the surge tank of the intake manifold. Also chech all vacuum hoses fordamage or loose fitting. Regards John

Idles too high

This is fairly normal on most cars. It is like the choke. When choked, the idle raises up to increase the internal temperature quicker. Also helps free friction of parts due to the cold. Idle is adjusted by the cars computer and o2 sensors.

1998 Ford Escort stalls sporatically after putting it in gearm hot or cold engine.

You need to clean the throttle valve and the idle speed control valve, they get sludged up and cause this issue. Get a can of throttle valve cleaner from your local parts store, pull off the rubber flex air intake hose and start engine, have someone hold engine at high idle while you spray the contents of the can into the intake, when the can is about 1/2 empty let the engine stall, disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and then restart, quickly push the throttle wide open a few times to blow out any loose sludge, and that should cure your stall.
