It acts like it would if it were out of gas. trying to fire. sputtering. but not running. it has gas. fluid levels are all fine now. doesnt appear to be water in the oil. but this is the result of being driven hot for about 10 miles. at which point it died with a pop and a puff of white smoke from the exhaust. it cranks over fine and tries to start but wont. any ideas?

It seems like you have a vacuum leak in a hose some where. Check under the hood for any rubber hoses that are dry-rotted, cracks, or sharp bends in any of them.

Change your thermostat before it sticks closed completely. Sticky thermostat is usually the cause.
Another possibility is that your radiator fan temperature switch is going bad. This is usually located next to the upper radiator hose at the gooseneck on your engine where the thermostat is located.
