2002 Saturn SL reverse lights inop

The back-up lights will not come on when I put my 2002 Saturn SL in reverse. I checked the bulbs and they are not burned out, the fuse is good. Any other reasons for this?

My motor is slamming when put in reverse

Check u-joints and cv-joints. When they wear out it can cause play in the drivetrain, causing a 'clunk' when you put the car in reverse (and usually from reverse to drive). But, it sounds likely that this is what's causing your problem.
