I have a Subaru Liberty (Legacy) 2.2 model which is doing the same thing. Some days it runs fine, and others, it will just stop dead while driving, or cut in and out.

First things I would look at would be when the last time the vehicle had been serviced ie: Plugs, Wires, Fuel filter ect... If it's a 2.2L engine the timing belt is due every 60,000miles in which case that would be the most likely cause of your hesitation. But most of the time it's just simple stuff like needing a tune up, cuz those spark plugs need to be changed every 30,000 miles along with the fuel filter, air filter, engine oil and filter, coolant, manual &/or auto transmission(if it's a manual trans, the front diff and trans are the same drain plug and it takes 3 qts of 75w-90), front diff fluid, rear diff fluid.

Sounds like a possible missfire.....should have someone check spark plugs, coil and wires for carbon tracking.

1992 Subaru legacy ignition switch turns on but it doesnt give turning sound to start engine.

I've changed quite a few ignition switches on Subaru's after 150,000 miles. It could also be a bad connection at the starter (the small wire) or a bad starter.
