When I start my car after it has been sitting for a while, it shoots straight up to 3,000 rpms, as if I've got my foot on the accelerator - which I haven't. After over revving for a few seconds it cuts out completely. When I start it up again it starts and revs to 2,000 and then drops back to less than 1,000 rpms and feels gutless. My mechanic couldn't figure out how to fix it so he told me to take it to an auto electrician. He got it to 'fault' code 'Battery' so he topped up and charged up the battery and it went ok for 6 weeks. Last week it did the 'over rev - cut out' thing again so I took it back to the same auto electrician and this time he's replaced the battery. It leaks a brown-oily-semi transparent fluid. Can anyone suggest anything?

It sounds to me like a vaccum (idle) issue. Do you have Air Conditioning?
SOURCE: Replacing battery and car dying out
something else is wrong with the car now,. the battery took care of the starting problem but you may want to have the alternator looked at as well. but what its doing now is a separate issue

anti-theft is what you want to start with. if its not the basics of loose wires to fuel pump, starter, battery, injectors/computer, or fuse blocks.

You need a 10 mil and 8 mil spanner, carb cleaner and mabie some wd40.
Remove the big hose which goes from the throttle body to the air filter housing. Under the throttle body there is a idle control valve, unplug it, spray some wd40 on the 8mil bolts and take them off. Clean the idle control valve and housing and anywhere else which looks dirty, dry it with a lint free cloth and then put everything back on.
remove the battery negative terminal and leave it off for 30 minutes, this will reset the ecu to factory settings.
On the top of the throttle body there is a black circular rubber screw cover, take that off and there should be a plastic screw.
Connect your battery and start your engine, unscrew the idle speed control (plastic screw) so it revs at 2000rpm cold. When the temp needle reached the middle so it revs at 1000rpm hot.
This should solve the problem, if you drive around and find that you in 4th gear, with your foot off the accelerator and the idle is going up and down madly then the idle control valve is worn out and it needs replacing. Cost around £125 on ebay.
