The 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee was prone to bad diff bearings because they changed the plant where they were made. The new plant used inferior materials. The only way to fix it is to replace and set the diff clearences.

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with newly rebuilt tranny, brakes and front left CV joint and boot makes jet engine noise at high speed

The only things this could be are bad parts or faulty installation and the only things that would get that hot are brakes and bearings.

Hello, Most of the time there is a spec sheet in the jeeps that will tell you this. They are usually on the inside of the glove box or under the hood on the front cowl or on the underneath of the hood itself. Good luck hope this is helpful.

4 wheel drive quit at some time didn't know it...drives fine only rear wheels pulling..could it be electrical ??

I hava a 1999 Grand cherokee loredo V8 with full time 4wheel drive. when the rear tires slip I am hearing a poping noise in the front end when the 4wheel drive engages. I was told by one person that it could be the chain in the transfer case slipping but I was told by a jeep salesman that this year jeep did not have a chain. Could this be the CV joints in the front axels?

Sounds a lot like the viscous coupling in the transfer case is failing. The part alone is over $500. If you continue to use it, it's likely it will damage the front differential as well. Coupling can fail on it's own from normal use and can also be damaged by using tires that have different rolling distance front to rear, why it's very important to only buy tires of the same size, four at a time, as even wear on a similar used tire can cause this problem.
You can get an entire unit from a scrapyard for less than half the price of the part. Just make sure you get one that matches the numbers on the round tag on the rear of the drivers side of the case.

I have a loud popping noise primarily when I backup. I drove it probably 1000 miles that way. Now the noise is starting in forward motion also

You should look underneath and make sure you don't have any leaks. Sounds like it could be one of the joints on a drive shaft or even the rear differential. It could also be one of the front axle joints.

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee rear end humming

check the differential fluid in the rear differential. if the fluid is low, add fluid and see if the noise is still there, if the fluid level is ok see if the fluid appears metallic, if it is metallic looking or excessively thick it would be a good idea to have the bearings checked out. i am in the process of rebuilding a front differential on a 98 jeep grand cherokee for the same problem. the bearings inside the differential on the carrier and pinion gear were worn out causing a humming noise. if the wear is excessive the gears might also need to be replaced

FRONT END

Drive the car in a parking lot and make left and right hand turns.
If the noise goes away on either turn then the problem is a front hub bearing.
If the noise is still there, it could be possible front differential bearings.
