Could have wrong amp alternator or battery could have short in alternator field wires or battery feed wire or damage.bad battery cables cause high resistance in charging circuit.

SOURCE: possible voltage regulator problem on alternator

Disconnect the battery, disconnect the red wire on the alternator stud, disconnect the (2) wire connector on the alternator. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition to the run position, check both red wires and the brown at the alternator and make sure there is voltage on all wires.
Per your description, I believe you will not have voltage on one or both of the large red wires.

SOURCE: Gauge shows low voltage, engine will die in about 15 minutes

you may have a dead short somewhere in the charging lines or elts where in the car try using a fluke if you have one or find a friend that can read it and start hunting...... have you checked the OBD2 for falt codes

Replaced alternator 3 times and battery 2 times and still getting various readings from alternator voltage on a 2006 mitsubishi galant 4 cycindler ?


depending on the variations
after starting or cranking for a while the voltage will read 14.5 to 14.8 volts as the battery charges up that reading will drop back to 13.2 volts
it will be lower at idle 12 >13 volts as the alternator speed has to be around 1,500 rpms to get the alternator to charge
using the lights and any extra power requirements the voltage will go up to max of 14.5 -14.8 volts to compensate for the extra current required
drive belt condition and tension will cause variations if it is not correct
bad connections ( dirty terminals , loose harness fittings , corrosion) will all affect the ability of the alternator /regulator to produce constant voltage
you will have to ask an auto electrician if the regulator is part of the ECM as most have the regulator in the alternator or a separate unit on the fire wall
If it not part of the ECM then the ECM will have no bearing on the readings

Changed the battery and alternator on my 2006 tundra still not charging. Runs 30 min. And dies . Any help ?


Go through the basics.
1 Make sure the alternator is charging (operating properly) by measuring the voltage between earth (battery negative) and the live terminal. It should be greater than 13 volts, less than 15V.
2 Make sure the regulator is being excited. Most modern alternators need to have the dash light working in order to send a minute current to the alternator regulator to kick it into life. If the dash light is out, (fused) the alternator won't work.
3 If the voltage from the alternator live terminal is good, check the voltage at the battery. It should be between 13.5 and 14.8 Volts. If this reading differs from the reading at the alternator output, you have a wiring issue.
4 Wiring issues may include but is not limited to:
a) bad connection at the battery terminal
b) bad connection at the main fuse,
c) bad connection at the starter motor. Some vehicles pick up the main power from the battery cable at the starter solenoid.
d) broken wire, bad connections on the main power lead connection terminals.

first check for voltage with the car running..anything over 16 volts is too high..most run at 14.5 to 15..the regulator (if not in the alternator already ) is a small block usually on the firewall .. to find locate the wires on the back of the alternator.. if they go to a box on the firewall thats the regulator..if they go straight to the battery positive, then its a built in regulator,,auto parts will check for free..

I have a 1999 3,8L ford mustang my tester indecates the alt is overcharging,but the batt light is coming on but it goes off! is there anything i can do to besides replace the alt?


Your alternator-mounted voltage regulator has failed. Luckily, your voltage regulator is
replaceable separately from the alternator (most voltage regulators are integral to the alternator,
and cannot be separately serviced).

Note: this works for 3.8L cobra alternators/voltage regulators only - in the 4.6L model, the
voltage regulator is an integral component of the alternator.

1999 Ford Mustang Cobra -3.8L engine

3.8L Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove 4 Torx® head screws holding the voltage regulator to the alternator rear housing. Remove the regulator, with the brush and terminal holder attached.

3. Hold the regulator in one hand and pry off the cap covering the A terminal screw head with a small prybar.

4. Remove 2 Torx® head screws retaining the regulator to the brush holder. Separate the regulator from the brush holder.

To install:

1. Install the brush holder on the regulator with 2 retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 25-35 inch lbs. (2.8-4.0 Nm).

2. Install the cap on the head of the A terminal screw.

3. Depress the brushes into the holder and hold the brushes in position by inserting a standard size paper clip, or equivalent tool, through both the location hole in the regulator and through the holes in the brushes.

4. Install the regulator/brush holder assembly and remove the paper clip. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 20-30 inch lbs. (2.3-3.4 Nm).

5. Connect the negative battery cable.

My batterie keeps dying. ive got new alternator and batterie. still keeps dying.


This is caused by a few things, either there is something on in the vehicle, the alternator is not good, the fuse that controls the alternator is bad, or the voltage regulator is faulty. Check the fuses first, then make sure that nothing is on when the key is out, and if it is neither of those, the have the alternator tested, and if it is not that, then you have a bad voltage regulator.

The voltage regulator is incorporated into the alternator itself. If the regulator has failed then the alternator needs to be replaced.

ck your alternator if you have one large white wire and two smaller dark wires you've got an internal regulator the entire alternator needs to be replaced if bad

a simple voltmeter you can still buy at radio shack will tell you in about 30 seconds

set meter for dc volts 25 volt scale place red probe on battery positive and black probe on battery negative note reading on voltmeter (11 to 12 volts) start truck/car at idle reprobe battery same as before volts should come to about 12/13 have someone give a slight throttle to engine volts should come to 13.8 volts and stay there never going over this if any volt reading was not as described Yep your voltage regulator/alternator is bad

Hi,I am Ron,Look at the alternator out put voltage,and have the battery load tested.Also check bad connection from battery to alternator(this is the large wire/cable).alternator turns the battery light on,why?You need to figure out witch one.A diode could be going out in the alternator,diodes change ac voltage to dc voltage ,that`s why the call it a alternator(alternating current)AC voltage means alternating current. If it goes unrepaired it can ruin battery,changing battery voltage from 12 volts dc to 12 volts ac.Also there is a built in voltage regulator that holds voltage down to about 14 volts charging while car is running.Voltage regulators can cut off charging completley or open wide allowing alternator to charge as much as 18 volts dc,ruining battery(boiling battery acid out of battery)and ruining alternator by burning fields and rectifiers out.So have it checked or do it your self.Auto parts stores can check alternator and battery.If I can be of more help,please [email protected]

are you saying that you got this battery from autozone? I went thru three batteries in a week from autozone because the lot# was bad. It,'s quite possible that you have either a short that is draining the battery or that the alternator isnt charging properly. To do a fast check, start the car then remove the positive battery cable with the car running. If it stays running, theres a chance its ok. If it dies, It's most likely the alternator or the voltage regulator Diods. On most cars, the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. I would take it to autozone and have the charging system checked
