1990 cabriolet has been in storage for 5 years. What do I need to do to start it?

It has been sitting up and I want to try to start it. Should I try jumping it or replacing the battery? Should I add new fuel? Drain any old fuel?

SOURCE: CANT GET VW BEETLE STARTED

hi if its not been started for five years and it is trying to start but just won,t keep running get someone to tow you and jump start it because i suspect the compressions will be low due to a build up of damp carbon valves sticking all in all the seats on the head and valve will not be seating so if you persisist with the jump start it forces the valves onto the seats and will clear the debrie if it still won,t go check your compressions yates210456

SOURCE: If the car sits for > week, car won't start.

The car does not have an alarm system but does have a remote start system installed by a certified dealer.

SOURCE: 1981 Vanagon 2.o L. Air Cooled --Has been sitting

will be rubbish in the carb blocking either the primary or more likely idle jet.
Remove carb (2 x 13mm nuts, back one tricky) Undo 5 screws on top of carb and seperate after taking off throttle return spring.
carefully remove gasket (can be reused) Undo injection jet (Centre) idle screw and volume control screw (side of car) Blow through all hloes (body and removed jets) with carb cleaner. Also check that fuel supply valve in top of carb is not blocked. Refit all jets. For idle and volume control (idle the big one) screw in fully and then undo for 2 and a half turns (rough setting). Fill carb 2/3rds with new fuel. Refit top and put carb back. Should start and run. Adjust Idle so tickover at 1000, the turn volume screw for max rpm. Then turn down Idle to 850.......sorted.

SOURCE: I have a 1990 VW Cabriolet that ran out of gas,

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You probably need to prime the engine. You need to put a little gas into the intake and then try starting it. Check to see if you have a fuel reset button. It may be located in the glove box. If you prime the gas, it should start. You might have to do this a few times before it will catch. If it doesn't, there might be a chance that you have another issue. Make sure you can hear your fuel pump kicking on when you first turn the key. Do this first. Turn the key on for 10 seconds and turn it off for 10 seconds. Do this 5 times and then try to start it. Repeat the process if you have to. This will prime the fuel pump.

When u turn the ignition on the fuel pump should make a hum sound until the fuel system is primed then it will stop until the engine is turning over to run.If u ran it out of gas the pump mybe burn't up The liquid (gas) in the tank keeps the pump cool.

The 1990 XJ6 has been sitting for the last 2 years and now won't start. The engine turns over fine. The dash gages don't seem to operate. I filled the gas tank with 5 gallons of premium gas. HELP!!!

I wish I could give you an instant fix, but I can't. Do you have spark? If so then its either your fuel pump or the CPS, crank position sensor. If no spark then it could be your coil.

Instrument cluster wiring 1989-1990 vw cabriolet

Not sure what the other wires go to, maybe the air bag, regardless all instruments are working on the '89.
