My car makes a squealing noise and thermostat varies.

My 1990 legacy started squealing when the heater was on a while back... now as of today it's squealing even when just my lights are on. Seems like the battery is struggling a bit too and the temperature gauge says it's getting warm but when the heater is on it's not even warm. Any advice?

Replace the failing drive belt and make sure it is tensioned correctly
the noise is from a slipping belt and the battery problem is because the alternator is not charging because of the drive belt problem

SOURCE: '90 Subaru Legacy overheating....

cool air and overheating point to low coolant level. Do you have a bleeder valve near the thermostat? You may have air trapped in the system. If no air trapped, the radiator may be plugged up not allowing proper circulation of coolant.

SOURCE: My 1990 subaru legacy lights up but won't turn over~not a sound.

your battery may not be charged enough to crank and start the vehicle or one of your cables may be loose so the connection is not there.

SOURCE: OVERHEATING!!!!

Since you changed your waterpump, you need to do an air bleed...
This is INSANELY important!
The airbleed is mounted on the top of the radiator on the passenger side.
Its made of plastic, has a seal, and looks like a 1/2 inch (12mm) philips screw head.
To do this, make sure the engine is cold and not running.
Use a large FLAT HEAD screw driver and turn it counter clockwise.
It might be very tight, so be prepared for a bit of torque to turn it!
Unscrew it, and look in the hole.
Coolant should be at the top of the bottom of the screw hole.
It should be low, so add coolant to the open hole.
While doing this, be sure the radiator cap is off so you can balance the fluid level properly.
Why do you need to bleed the system?
The engine has a slight tilt upwards toward the radiator, and both your waterpump, and block will have a tendancy to leave air near the top of the block and heads.
This is a common mistake on several makes after a coolant change.
Make sure all fluids are topped off, fill the overflow tank to its max level indicated on the tank itself and your done.
Provided you havent been driving long on the car in this condition, it shouldnt blow a headgasket.
A good way to know if the headgasket is bad is the radiator cap will have a brownish "slime" indicating combustion gasses are getting into the cooling system.
IF this is the case, your engine is pumping combustion gasses into your system and no amount of air bleeding with help.
Another tell tale sign of coolant being pressurized, is a overflowing "overflow" tank, and a sudden blast from Normal operating temprature to HOT, and then suddenly.. it goes back to Normal again.
There is usually a "gurgling" sound under your dash..
Lets assume you just need to do an air bleed, and things will go back to normal.
Also, if your airbleed screw has alittle coolant leaking around it, replace it with a new one as the seal and plastic have worn due to age.
Good luck!

The heater does not work there is no thermostat in right now and I also have a temperature gage that flux and what she wakes up and down it's normal when moving and go as high or when idling

The thermostat is used for the heating system. It slows the antifreeze down in your radiator to allow it to warm up before its cycled through your heater core. Put the thermostat back in, heater will work. Will also regulate flux temps.

95 Subaru Legacy overheating, top rad hose is hot, bottom hose is cold, antifreeze being pushed back into overflow bottle, fans are working properly, what is the problem ??

does your heater work? if not than your thermostat is stuck. be careful not to get the car hot as those engines are sensitive and will warp the cylinder heads quickly.

1990 Subaru Legacy with an intermitent overheating issue. Has had the thermostat replaced. Any ideas? Thanks, Graham

I would fill radiator with fluid, start car and allow to warm up. Watch catch can for bubbles. If there are bubbles I would suspect a head gasket leak.

Legacy estate overheat problems

I would replace the thermostat as a first step. It sounds like the thermostat is not opening after warming up, keeping the coolant from circulating.

My 1990 subaru legacy was overheating.

well....if that stopped your overheating problem, that's good, but todays engines depend on running at a certain temp. for proper performance, gas mileage, etc. We can thank unleaded fuel for that....

Heater and airconditioner work half time thermometer varies

It could be the thermostat (simple fix), check this first, Then i would go for the water pump but worst scenario would be the head gasket gone, Have a pressure test done on the car to eliminate this, Hope this helps
