All,
I drive a 1990 Chevy Cavalier which has been very good to me over the years.
Yesterday, however, the car stalled out on me when I slowed down at a light after taking the exit ramp off the highway. I thought it might have been a fluke because I had to rapidly change speeds a couple of times to merge, but it happened again at another light a few minutes later.
As I slow down, I feel the car try to downshift and it feels/sounds like it is having a hard time doing this. Eventually if gives up and the engine shuts off. I can restart the car immediate, shift back into drive, and everything appears to work normally.
The car just recently had its oil changed a tune up, including all new spark plugs. Any ideas as to why this might be happening would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
If your car is equipped with a lockup torque converter in the transmission, a part called the torque converter clutch solenoid could be defective. Any transmission shop should know what to look for. Sometimes you can unplug an electrical connector on the side of the transmission and drive the car. If this takes care of the problem this verifies that the torque converter clutch solenoid is the problem. This usually will make either your check engine or service engine soon light come on when you do this however. This condition usually feels like you are trying to stop a manual transmission car without pushing in on the clutch. good luck.

Thanks for the effort! Turns out it was a leak in a vacuum hose.
