I have a 2002 Lexus GS300 and my check engine lite is on??? it has 75,000 miles on any suggestions, checked the gas cap and that doesnt seem to turn the lite off???
Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you should have the car diagnosed and repaired. First step is to find out what code turned the light on.
Any independent service center should be able to check it for you. Or you can go to Autozone and have them check the codes for you. Let me know what they are and I can give you advice. If it hasn't been scanned fo codes, the most common problem relates to gas caps. Evaporative emissions systems. When a cap gets old it will not function correctly. Consequently the check engine light will come on. Do not buy an after market cap. My experience with aftermarket caps have been very poor. The majority of times I tried after market caps on customer cars, I got return problems. Factoy caps seem to resolve that issue. Once you replace the cap, the light should go out in a few cycles. It's a cheap investment if it's the original cap anyway, it'll save you the cost of scanning and the gamble is almost 70% right.
GMC sent me a letter saying that gas guage not working has been a problem and they will fix and pay half. Also my mechanic says that it is common to get a check engine lite when you add gas to tank, especially when you fill it. Sometimes I will take off gas cap and let air out then replace cap and the check engine lite will go off. (usually). Nothing to worry about.
Sometimes the light will stay on for 100-500 miles depending on the fault code. You can disconnect the battery to reset it, but you will have to reset the radio and other memory such as seats mirrors.
turn the key from off to on 40 times. Or disconnect the battery for a few hours to erase memnory. then drive for 10 miles while it relearns, may run rough during the drive.
This light is not programmed to a service interval, it is a fault sensor code light. The check engine light will come on after refueling if you have a loose gas cap. It may also come on if you have an exhaust leak or a fuel mixture issue casued by one of several 02 senosrs malfunctioning . If the issue is the gas cap often after releasing and tightening the cap your light will go out within a day or two of driving. You could also add some fuel injector cleaner. Sometimes the lights will need to be reset with a code reading device plugged in under dash. This device will read out engine fault codes and help determine the problem are in the engine. If you have a failed O2 sensor and continue to drive the ECU will adjust your fuel mixture in an attempt to correct the problem, so it is best to have the readout checked. Lexus service is second to none and Lexus is not out to take your money, only to ensure a long and satisfying ownership with a top performing car. You are VERY fortunate to have an 03 with such low mileage. My 2001 RX300 has over 150,000 miles and is still going strong, same engine as yours. Post back with an update
I had check engine light and TRAC OFF. OBD-II MIL code was P1133 which is Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Response Malfunction and scanned by AutoZone. After disconnecting the battery for 10-15 minutes, the lights went off. I cleaned the gas cap and tightened it firmly. For the last 400 miles, the lights have not come back. When scanning using Snap-on one, no code was detected. I think gas cap was the reason for the lights.
check the gas cap...i"ve found that a loose cap will set off the check light...if you dont have a computer to recall or reset the codes i believe it"ll just go away after you drive it for a couple days on its on once corrected.
turn the key to the on position and pump the gas 4-5 times, this should help. My mom has a 03 silverado wich also done this and I contacted a dealer and they gave me this solution and it worked.
hOW DO I FIGURE OUT WHAT CODE??? DEALERS ARE TOO $$$
