I am told the transmission is stuck in 3rd gear. Even when taking off from a complete stop, I have to rev the engine before the car moves. Sometimes after a long drive the engine would switch off and only start after a 10 minute break. What could be the problem?

This is called limp mode chrysler did this to protect the transmission without leaving the owner stranded by the road,a few things will cause this mainly putting the wrong fluid in the transmission, they use only atf+4,or the govenor pressure sensor is acting up which should cause a check engine light to come on,or the transmission just needs a fluid and filter change, should be done every 2yrs or 36k miles, due the fluid and filter change about 40.00 but if you have the wrong fluid then the whole system needs to be flushed and refilled-transmission-torque convertor, radiator and cooler if equipped and all lines.

sorry to hear that!!! Warning light came on and usually will set a code that indicates mismatch of speed & rpm.

transmission pump failing or converter loose or cracked drive plate where converter bolts up to
could be slipping clutches or bands
or even the control module
get it to a workshop asap!
preferaly dont flat tow it or drive it as your only doing more damage

first thing i would try is changing the transmission fluid out and filter, i beleive its almost 8 quarts. use a full quart of lucas transmission additive with the new fluid. if this doesn't help, the transmission will either need replaced or rebuilt

Take it to a major parts store and they can hook up a scan tool and tell you what is wrong. Most do this for free.
For
car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be
transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.
For
more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its
complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----
