1996 chevy c1500 brake/tail lights

The tail lights work until you press the brake. when on the brake there are no lights on at all, no tail no brake no nothing. bulbs are good. replaced the tail light connector plates but that didnt help. also checked to make sure there was power going through the wires and it is, any suggestions on what else it could be? also no fuses out either, thanks

Bad Ground, check to make sure the grd. strap from firewall to engine is not broken and also the firewll to frame ,if one of these is broken or not tight it will cause the prob. you are having, also make sure the connector at the back drivers side where you would plug trailer harness in has a ground there also !

All grounds checked fine in the voltage drop test.

SOURCE: Brake light dont work. 2006 chevy truck, 4.8L 2wd

Some of these had two fuses for brake lights. One for the top/center stop lamp and another for the rear left and right brake lights. Usually one said "stop" and the other said "brake" and one was in the underhood panel while the other was in the dash fuse panel. It's not uncommon to blow a brake light fuse [LR and RR] if you tow a trailer but some of these had seperate fuses for the trailer lights also. If you have a test light check both sides of the two fuses for power [ignition key on] while stepping on the brakes. It should at lest narrow your search a bit.

The headlights lights are working but the brake lights aren't. I suspect a bad fuse but don't have an owners manual, so I need a fuse panel diagram for a 1996 Chevy C1500. Got one?

no, sorry . but i do have a suggestion that might help. do the taillights work? if so check the brake light switch on the brake pedal. also , does the high mount light work and not the rear ones? if so you may want to check the turn signal switch to make sure there is voltage on that circuit.

you have an e-brake switch shorted to ground the only light that goes on is the brake light on the dash when you engage the e-brake. check for fryed wires near the e-brake pedel and lever assy.

Brake lights dont work but the other tail lights do

Check the brake light switch under the dash attached to the brake peadal arm. It is wher the break booster push rod attaches. Sometimes that switch works loose.

I have a 1996 Chevy C1500 5.7L Vortec. I hooked it up to a trailer and lost dash lights, tail lights and parking lights. All other lights work. Fuses look fine. Is there a fuse separate from the lighting...

There is a n instrument panel fuse and a tail light fuse. Check both with a 12V test llight not just visually. Sound like one of the are blown, probably the brake/stop light fuse. Usually the dash will darken, when a tailight fuse blows, sort of a sneaky way of letting you know theres something wrong. Now is going to be WHY DID IT BLOW ? Hope this helps
