To check this out you must remove the shift handle by using a butter knife to remove a horseshoe clip facing the very front of the handles shank. Then remove the shifter plate to check the cables

SOURCE: My 1994 suburban wont shift into 4 wheel drive.

There could be several solutions to this problem but first you need to check your tires. I know it sounds strange but if your tires are unevenly worn it can cause some 4x4s not to engage or disengage properly. A quick test is to find a level parking lot take a piece of chalk or marker and make a mark in the same area on your tire sidewall on each tire, then with someone watching from the outside roll your vehicle forward letting the mark make a complete rotation several times on one tire coming back to the same spot. Then measure the distance each mark is in relation to the first mark that you've used as a reference. If all tires were evenly worn all 4 marks would come back to rest in the same spot if they're unevenly worn there will be a difference in the location they come to rest at this is the measurement your looking for. Sometimes a difference of a 1/4 inch will be enough to affect your 4x4 in reference to engaging or disengaging properly. If your tires are unevenly worn correct this first. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: shift handle moves freely with out shifting trans

The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department

2000 expedition won't stay in park

More than likely you can fix it yourself. There is a possibility first something has fallen into the shift mechanism and is blocking it from going into park. The other possibility is the shift interlock cable may have slipped off, or the cable broke.
To fix this you would have to open the shift console. The interlock cable is the small one, it should attach to some sort of lever that prevents the car from shifting into or out of park.
I hope yours has a floor shifter rather than a column shift, they are easier to fix. The last possibility is there is something in the engine compartment that is preventing the shift lever from reaching park, and though it's not likely I've seen it happen before.

The gear shift mounts to a rod. The rod has the c clap that the shifter clips into. Fords a joke and won't replace it. But u can get the replacement lever on ebay for around fifty bucks. 2007 Ford Explorer Sport-Trac automatic trans shift lever release.

Most common is a failing brake light switch. If the brake lights don't come on when the shifter is stuck and they work when the shifter works you need a new switch.
