97 Celica - Key stuck in accesory position

Once parked, attempted to turn key off but would only turn to accessory position. Can not turn past accessory to take the key out. Rechecked mulitple times to make sure it's in park, noticed that shifter will shift from park through 1st gear without depressing button on the side of the shifter. Also, once the battery has died from being left in the accessory position, the key can easily be removed. Once charged and run for 20-30 minutes, when turned off duplicates the problem. Sounds like it's with the shifter and not the ignition lock cylinder, but not sure. Need help!

While in park, press shifter firmly even farther above park. Hold shifter and turn key.
The linkage may need adjusting. If this does not help the situation, then the pins inside the ignition are not getting pressed down because key is getting worn. You can try to tap around the ignition lightly with hammer to shake the pins loose.

I have a 2006 chevy equinox. the ignition key is stuck in the all the way back position and nothing works. could not even unlock the car with spare key

Attempt to squirt some aerosol graphite lock oil into the lock past the key.
Wear goggles so splash stays out of eyes.
Once sprayed, carefully attempt to wiggle and gently work the key out.

Best of luck, if the key is removed, be sure to use graphite lube regularly, especially at the first sign of insertion / extraction resistance.

I have a 97 Pontiac Sunfire...The key is stuck in the ignition turned on...won't turn off...How do I get the key out?

Make sure the car is in park, if that does not work, put it in neutral and try. Search for a button under the ignition key to release the key. Also turn the steering wheel so it is not in a locked position. Good luck!

How can I get key out which is stuck in ignition of 2008 cobalt. It also won't start

This can happen if the battery is low / dead. To solve, connect a set of jumper cables between the battery in the Cobalt and a running car's battery. Shut off the running car. In the Cobalt, make sure all accessories (lights, radio, fan, etc.) are off. Step on the brake, then move the gear shifter fully into the PARK position. Next, either attempt to start the engine, or turn the key to the OFF position and remove it from the ignition.

I hope this helps & good luck!

How do you remove a key from a Honday ignition

  • Ensure that the vehicle is off and in "Park" or "Neutral." If the vehicle is in gear or running, the key cannot be removed.
  • Place your left hand on the top of the steering wheel and place your right hand on the key.

Wiggle the steering wheel left and right, and attempt to turn the key into a different position, such as the "Accessory" or "On" position. Continue until the key moves freely.

Turn the key back to the "Off" position, then pull key out ignition

Key locks in the ignition in the ACC position. can't take key out

when you turn key to acc pos that is telling the ignition to go into a accessory mode which runs the radio, wipers etc... but it doesnt allow the ignition circuit to run, and the key in most vehicles will not be able to come out, this is a security protection so that you do not leave accessories on that will drain the battery. The ignition key should only be able to be removed in the OFF position.

Pontiac bonneville 2000 key will not turn past 1st position. 1st position turns on the electrical features, but will not turn to the acc or to start. Wheel is not locked. Had to push the car to a parking...

I had this problem with my bonne as well. One day in a corner store parking lot I could not turn the key at all. My father is an mechanic and I had him come over to help me. He put oil on the key and beat, easily, the key with a shoe. Once the key was moving again he moved the key to all positions for two minuites. Inside the key hole are little pieces that fall around the key. Once all the tumblers fall the car accepts the key and off you go. His explination was the the tumblers were just stuck and needed some love. Havent had a problem since.
