1992 VW PAssat 4cyl 2L starter motor problems

I's a long story , so I'll summarize here .
Two years ago I was told that my 1992 Passat needed a new starter motor. After 5 starter motors and the car working for awhile each time, then back to great screeching noises when trying to start car - this guy told me my flywheel needed replacing. I couldn't afford it.
The car has sat in the yard for a year. Then a friend came over and discovered
1. Previous'mechanic' had not replaced lower bolt in starter motor.
2. Bushing was totally mucked up.
3. Flywheel /Ring gear was not damaged at all.
so a local mechanic has said that the ignition needs replacing.
My question is:- does that sound feasible?
When I look on-line for ignition 92 Passat - a lot of different ignition parts come up.
Is this a difficult job?
Please help as I don't have the money for expensive repairs, but am going crazy not having a car...

Jeremy - the car tries to turn over but there is a screeching noise and the flywheel stops turning. all the accessories work when I turn on the key.
the other day we replaced the starter motor, bushing and bolts and oddly enough the car started - allowing me to drive 20 miles to have it emissions tested, it passed! and was registered - yeah! Drove home and the car won't start again! Same screeching noise, same as above...

why does he say the ignition needs replacing? does the car turn over, and when you turn on the key do all the acessories work?

The flywheel has probely been damaged where the starter engages as the motor only stopps in two places therefore the flywheel may be damaged in those places

SOURCE: Blower Not Working In Speeds 1 to 3

Try to locate blower motor wires, usually up under dash on passenger side, maybe behind glove box, and follow wires from motor and they will usually connect to housing area, and real good chance that connection is your resistor pack if held on by screws or small bolts. Other place that you may find resistor is opposite side of firewall from blower, under hood. Look for connection at firewall, usually on passenger side.

SOURCE: oil in water resovour vw 2002 passat

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
If the oil cooloer fails internely you will have a mix of coolant and oil. In the engine and in the Radiator,

But not to say the other guys were wrong...

SOURCE: I have coolant leaking from my 2006 VW Passat.

try ebay for these parts new and do it yourself or buy the parts and get a garage to do it.Old mk2 golfs flanges would crack after age but for a 3 year model to do this sounds odd particulary the hoses.

1999 VW Passat AC/heat doesn't work? The belt broke this summer? I was told should still blow heat even if no belt?

If you are talking about the belt for the ac compressor, yes the heater should still work.
If the blower is not working, you will need to have the blower motor checked for voltage and ground.
