2006 ford fusion key will not come out of ignition

This morning I went to the gas station and when I pulled in my car would not shift into Park completely and key would not come out of ignition. I restarted vehicle, shifted into park again and also applied parking break. This solved the problem and key came out. HOWEVER: I tried this again to make sure it wasn't a fluke and had a harder time putting it in park. It still wouldn't go all the way in park. THEN, this time the shifter's button would not push in and I was a sitting duck. I messed with it again turning the key in the ignition and changing gears till the car fully went in park. I also heard a very faint grinding noise by my rear driver's side wheel. But when I drove home and parked there. The car did just as it should. What's going on with my car?

Electronic's . Your vehicle has a couple safety system that are computer controlled . Shift interlock won't let the gear selector move from park into a gear unless you foot is pushing on the brake pedal .Brake switch is a input to the SJB - smart junction box , ford's body control module. The SJB controls a lock solenoid that will lock the gear selector . Plus has system feature that won't let the key lock an be pulled from the ignition if not in park . Problems happen that cause these not to work . Your best bet , have a qualified repair shop check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes .

SOURCE: Can't remove my Key but in park

The transmission range sensor is malfunctioning. The range sensor tells the computer what gear the selector lever is in. If it will not read the park position, it will not disengage the interlock system. Take it to a good repair shop that you trust and have them check the function of the sensor. Good Luck.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 e-450 that sometimes rolls when its in park.

Your linkage is out of adjustment or worn bushing. There is a series of links and rods that accomplish the changing of gears,(especially with a column shifter). The links sometimes have plastic or nylon bushings. They become worn or broken and allow for maladjustment--not going into gear or park fully.
If it isn't going into park and the linkage is correctly adjusted with no damage, you should suspect internal transmission damage.

If you don't feel comfortable about this repair, a respected shop is your best bet.

SOURCE: The steering ignition lock is

Hello,

I read your problem and yes your steering wheel lock is jammed. Now first of all, they are designed only to unlock when working normal in the park position when turning the key for safety reasons and anti theft reasons. If your ignition will not turn, you CAN and WILL cause more damage to the park park lock mechanism if forcing the park shift lever. Meaning it is not designed to take out of park and then turn the key to start the car, especially if ignition will not turn. All you can do is try and try and move the wheel to the left, with foot on break and keep trying to turn key. Now It seems that will not work as you have been trying this. But by trying to force it out of park it could cause jamming more. In this case it is possible, might have to take apart ignition or even pull steering wheel, and access the locking mechanize. Some times you can get lucky and have a couple people rock the car while in park, and trying to relieve some pressure as you turn wheel some and turn key. However, this very seldom works. Your ignition is tied into the steering lock mechanism. So, I would first try and remove or replace ignition, and if that does not do it, then of course would have to pull steering wheel and unjam the lock mechanism or possibly replace. I hope this helps, I just didn't want you to cause more damage, by forcing it out of park. Thanks Mike from fixya

My 2006 Ford fusion does not release the key from the ignition when it's in park???

You have a problem with THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM !

The floor shifter assembly:

  • locks the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.

  • requires the transaxle range selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

PINPOINT TEST A: THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK CORRECTLY

A1 TEST THE BRAKE LIGHTS

  • Apply the brake pedal and view the brake lights.

  • Do the brake lights illuminate?

Yes

GO to A2 .

No

REFER to Section 417-01 .

A2 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK ACTUATOR POWER CIRCUIT

  • Disconnect: Floor Shifter Harness Connector C3245.

  • Key in ON position.

  • Measure the voltage between floor shifter harness connector C3245-1, vehicle harness side and ground, while applying the brake pedal.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
A3 TEST SHIFT INTERLOCK ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT

  • Key in OFF position.

  • Measure the resistance between floor shifter harness connector C3245-4, vehicle harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

INSTALL a new selector lever. Refer to Selector Lever in this section.

No

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

2006 Mercury Milan key stuck in ignition.

There's a TSB published by ford for this condition. It's caused by a binding shifter button.

Publication Date: July 6, 2007
FORD: 2006-2007 Fusion LINCOLN: 2006 Zephyr MERCURY: 2006-2007 Milan
This article supersedes TSB 07-2-1 to update the Part List. ISSUE: Some 2006-2007 Fusion, Milan and 2006 Zephyr vehicles built before 9/4/2006 may exhibit a customer concern of the ignition key getting trapped or a shifter slider binding condition. Most of the key trapped conditions are caused due to a binding shifter button which does not allow the pawl to contact the park detect switch.
ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE If the key will not release from the ignition cylinder lock follow the Key Trapped procedure. On vehicles with a hard-to-shift shift lever into park or slider bunching/binding then follow the Shifter Slider Binding procedure. Key Trapped:
  1. Actuate knob button 5-10 times, observe for binding or sticky condition.
  2. Replace knob assembly if the knob sticks following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-05. NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE SHIFT KNOB DO NOT REUSE THE SCREWS. REMOVE AND DISCARD THE SCREWS. INSTALL TWO NEW SCREWS AND TIGHTEN TO 18 LB-IN (2 N-m). DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.
Shifter Slider Binding:
  1. If shifter slider is bunched up or binding, replace bezel assembly following WSM, Section 307-05. NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE BEZEL, CARE NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OVERRIDE TAB IS PROPERLY ALIGNED INTO ITS GUIDE. REFER TO FIGURE 1.
