I cannot get my 1996 Discovery out of the differencial locked position and move it to the right so I can drive in normal conditions. I have tried everything, but it will not budge. Do I need to check the bearings? Is there any easy way to return it to the unlocked position that I am missing. I feel like if I push it to hard, I am going to break something. Please help!

SOURCE: problem with discovert 300tdi automatic

If you start it, and drop it into 1 does it move? If so, sounds like the sprag clutch (iirc) has gone - this is the clutch that allows you to freewheel at lights and what not. Common problem on the Auto gearboxes. Will need a rebuild I'm afraid.

Unless I am mistaken the 96 runs as all wheel drive in high. Only run in low four wheel if off road. Do need to do this from time to time in order for low gear not to lock up from not being used.

Yes it should be in High, unfortunatly the Land Rover discovery does not have 2 wheel drive capability. Unless one of the shift modulators is stuck then what your seeing is normal. There are kits available to change the gear ratio on the transfer case to get lower revs. I belive they are called a Disco box. This will decrease the torque and increase the power needed for take offs but will reduce the engine revs

Just need to be sure that my 2004 Z71 is in the right position on the lever after using the 4 wheeh drive yester day . the lever is on the floor board of the truck.

Your truck under "normal" driving conditions you want in 2 wheel drive. The indicator on your shifter should either show as 2H or 4x2 or have a picture of the rear wheels only.

My land rover discovery is stuck in 4 wheel drive, what can cause this?

The discovery is as previously mentioned permanent four wheel drive. However the difflock/range lever in most suffers from lack of use and siezes all i had to do when i bought mine was plenty of WD40 and patience as i don't think it had been in low range or difflock from the day it was built.don't try to force it just spray it and let it soak then try keep doing this and it should free up if not it may be the selector grubscrew has worked loose just threadlock it and screw it back in.

I just got a Landrover Discovery 1991 V8. Tried to open the bonnet release, but no joy. How can I open the bonnet if the release cable is Kaput? Any help gratefully received

Try to put a screwdriver from the front plastic grille, up to the lock mechanism and move it to open the mechanism. If the bonnet has opened slightly , then you need assistance. One person to try to lift the bonnet and another to push the bonnet from side to side.. Unfortunately its not possible to remove the front grille to gain access to the lock without braking the plastic grille, as there are screws holding it to the top valance.

How do you you lock or unlock 4wd on a 2000 land rover discovery

The 1996 discovery is full time 4wd and can only be changed from high to low range using the transfer case shifter with the truck in neutral rolling between 1-5mph. you can also move the same lever left to right to engage the transfer case diff lock

The differentials should be disengaged or you going to do damage. They should only be locked in when moving at low speeds.
