I need to no how to remove a altenator for a 1996 ford exolorer
First remove your negative battery cable
remove your serpentine belt by taking a 1/2in. drive ratchet to your belt tensioner.
then remove the three bolts holding your alternator in place
then unplug the wires connected to it, and you are ready to install the new one
It's actually a 3/8'' ratchet for the belt tensioner. And, remember to go counterclockwise when taking tension off belt to remove, going clockwise will be $40 (new tensioner) wrong turn.

I replaced mine about 2 months ago. All is correct above from livelively12, except remove unplug/disconnect the wire from the alternator before you pull the 3 bolts out...just so you don't rip the eye splice off the end of the cable...or worse, break the wire off at a bad point. Also, if you haven't replaced yet...you need to check the drive pully and make sure it's the same size on the new alternator as the old one. If not, it's an easy swap and you can just put the old pully on the new one.
