When I start my car, there is a loud metal on metal sound. It is somewhat like a grind, but it is NOT my brakes. When I back up, it gets louder. When I put my car into drive, the sound continues, basically until I have driven the car for about 8-10 minutes. It does not make this sound when it is warm outside. My brakes are in great shape. My power steering fluid is full and not leaking (although I thought this was the initial issue, because I've heard other cars that sound like mine & it IS the power steering), nor do I have issues out of my steering column. Could it possibly be my timing belt? When it is worn or rusted or ready to be replaced, could it quite possibly be making this sound? My car has at least 120k miles on it and the timing belt hasn't been replaced, ever. About how much does this cost for a 2006, V6, Accord LX? Thank you so much for your input!
A timing belt usually makes a loud squealing noise (like a 'shriek/scream') when it is worn or slipping, not a grinding noise.
A quick check - before you start the car - is to pour some water onto the inside of the belt where it goes around the pulleys. If there's no noise at start up, you know it is the belt at fault (or the metal pulley/s are worn).
There are kits to replace the timing belt (and bearings). Have a look on Ebay:

If the noise happens before the car moves - it obviously can't be your brakes. When backing up the noise may appear louder simply because your head is turned ..
If the noise is actually coming from a wheel, it possibly could be the backing plate on the brakes - the thin disk behind the brake may be rubbing on the rotor.
However.. a grinding noise ... if it is coming from the front of the engine in the general area of the timing belt be very wary - if a bearing or the belt fails, your engine will be history.
Why not give a mobile mechanic a call? Those guys are usually quite good and a lot cheaper than a workshop

from my experience its sounds like ur front rotors may need resurfaceing...if ur doing that...may as well replace the brakes on the front as well...sometimes glazed front brake pads may make a sound but never heard of it as a grind, usually its a squeal...have ur dealer check ur rotors for hot spots in which u would need them replaced if they are overheated..also check the front pads for cracked brake pad material

the grinding noise you hear is the pump out of fluid you need to find and repair the leak then check the pump it may be u/s if no oil in it and it has been run
SOURCE: 2004 Saturn VUE AWD V6 has a harsh grinding sound in front wheels
Have you checked your wheel bearings? When these go out you can get a harsh grinding noise. This sounds like that is what it might be. Does it happen when you are going fast/slow turning/going straight? I know you said it's inconsistent but the more info the better. However, if I had to bet, based on what you have already said, it's your wheel bearings. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!
