good chance you have a clogged cat converter ...with engine running have someone rev engine and see how much flow you have out tail pipe. also if you hear the sound of something rattling inside exhaust that is another tell tale sign

SOURCE: why does my 1998 nissan

Hi
You did not mention your transmission, if its automatic or manual.
Well, start with manual transmission. The problem of uphill climbing with manual is the breakdown of clutch disc, mainly it is already eroded, the shoes( abrasive material ) is thinning out. That's why its failing to grip on the flywheel to move the wheels. A technician will/can replace it with the whole set( clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing ). Actually its the disc got the problem, but with one time repair and cost wise you should the whole set. Just remind the technician to shave off the flywheel before putting on the clutch set.
Automatic transmission, the problem sometimes is the A/T Fluid, check if the level is low. If its low just top it up and test drive it. Still couldn't climb the hills, check the filter and the state of the AT fluid, smell the fluid via tranny dipstick, if its smells burned you got problem on those clutches and needs to pull down the tranny to replace it. The other internal problem would be the electronic governor and solenoid inside.
Don't forget to go in your nearest Nissan dealer for free check up and estimate, so that you could have some idea of the problem. Ask them if they could check the ECU for the transmission!

Then compare the price for repair, reconditioned, and wreckers parts.

Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for using FixYa!

My nissan xterra 2000 model shows service engine soon on the dash board.I cannot also speed or climb hills easily, my mechanic removed 2002 xterra brain box and it works well on my car.should i replace it...

Sounds more like the EGR valve is faulty. Change this Exhaust Recirculation Valve (EGR) before you do anything else. See that your power comes back and you can speed and climb like you used to.

Loss of power when going up

in the first place you must change the filter and the transmission oil in your automatic gear box , if the problem persists and your gear box shift not the gear for climbing hills it is a tehnycal problem with your gear box , but in my opinion ( i had a similar problem with my car ) this is the only problem. God help You ! Sorry for my English !

We have a nissan 2002 altima that looses power going up a bit of a hill. It starts ok but the battery doesn't keep the charge and the altinator has been replaced. No power when stepping on the gas...

Please check the throttle valve connections and make sure it's working properly.Since there is no power gain during hill climb, the desired torque is not achieved due to excessive wear of gear tooth or due to the problem with the clutch plate. Please make sure these are properly working.
