88 Ford F250 rear gas tank will not work

I have an 88 light duty F250, 5.0 engine and dual gas tanks. The main tank works fine although the fuel guage isn't as accurate as it used to be. When I switch to the rear tank, the guage goes to empty, but it still draws from the front tank. The rear tank is full and there is no overflow from the rear tank into the front tank. Thanks for the help.

the 1st thing to do is verify the dash switch is working with a test light, sounds like it might have an issue.

Sounds like the rear fuel pump in the tank is not working and the float or sender is bad also. check to see if the rear pump is working should make a humming noise.

How do I know which tank im on from cab never had 2 tank truck before

You've not identified the truck model or year.. Some trucks had after market installations of auxiliary tanks. The Ford 150 with dual tanks had pumps in both tanks. Some suggest dual tanks were always quirky, problematic. However, dependent upon the year, the pumps might be located in the tanks OR the pump might be on the engine. Newer trucks with fuel injection actually had three pumps. The newest have a pressure pump in the front tank and a balance pump in the rear. Some switches affect only the guage. P haps one of the forums below can help when you supply more detail.

2007 F350 4x4 regular cab V10 gas guage quit working I had the sending unit and fuel pump changed the fuel guage went to 1/4 and sat there. Any tips? Fuel guage wont work.

I'm assuming this has dual tanks, do you know if it is not working on both tanks ?
Most people would check the circuit for the gauge at the tank. The sending unit grounds the gauge on the dash.

The fuel guage on my 2005 F250 super duty 6 liter diesel engine just went to zero and has 3/4 of a tank of fuel any assistance on where to check for a damaged wire or loose connection

wiring harness under dash.
wires coming off top of fuel tank.
check all fuses.
do you do a lot of off roading - you may have cut or pulled a wire out.
finally you may have:
1. a bad fuel tank sending unit - need to drop the tank to replace.
2. a bad fuel gage.
3. a bad instrument panel

Just filled the gas tank in my 2006 f-350 turbo diesel super duty (6.0), started the truck and the guage showed a full tank. Drove down the road about 1/10 of a mile and the guage dropped to dead empty...

A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.

Gas guages messed up

volt meter, fuel gauge, oil pressure and coolant temp all share the same power and ground

the circuit you want to check is the yellow and white wire from the dash to the dual switch

Fuel guage-1991 ford aerostar

2 things.
There is a sensor that goes from the dash to the fuel pump. If it is disconnected, dirty, or faulty, then thats an easy fix.
There is also a float in the gas tank itself. From what Ive been told after time, or going over big speed bumps, etc, that the float just simply doesnt float or register.
Mine actually shows I have a full tank or im empty at all times. No in between.
