Hi Dennis, we have an '01 Acura MDX that just had its tranny rebuilt Nov 2012 (rebuilt torque converter w/new 3rd gear sensor) @ a large transmission shop. After getting it back, the shifter seemed a little sticky & got worse over the following 2 month period. Took it back in, they disconnected cable & said shifter was still sticky & believed it to be in need of a new shifter console as the old one was very dirty & gunked up w/spills, etc. They ordered the part from Acura & it seems to have fixed the shifting problem, but now the "P" will not light up in dash when put in park. The tech can make it light up by adjusting the cable but at the cost of D1 & 2 not engaging. They are thinking it is the shift interlock solenoid that is defective in the new part and will be trying that Monday morning. Do you have any suggestions?

check the linkage for the selector and see if anything is binding.

The 1st thing to do is have a test run on the transmission control module to see if any trouble codes are present, next have you ever serviced the transmission, fluid and filter change, should be done at 60,000 miles, on occasion this can cure problems like yours.

I doubt they did anymore damage but i`ll bet that the engine was damaged from the training going out such as valve guides and seals and carbon build up on plugs ETC.

First service tranny ( change fluid and replace filter) go to autozone for your parts.

Have the park/ neutral safety switch checked. this is most likely your problem.
