Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

Speedometer, tach and all up front guages stop working randomly!!

My 1998 jeep cherokee has a stange problem while driving sometimes my speedometer, tach and all up front gauges go out!!! If i push on the plexi-glass sometimes it will come back on...and sometimes it's out for days!! I've checked all the fuses and relays, but before I go through the hassle of pulling out the dash to check connections or pull out the neutral safety switch, (which I can't seem to locate where that plugs into the gear shift) I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Me, too! 1998 Sport - right after I had the airbag fixed from a recall notice. If I tap on the plexi, it generally comes back.

Same thing happens to me, all the gauges go down and the airbag light comes on. Only thing that makes mine stop is tapping the brake.

1998 Cherokee - 241,000 miles. Same issue. Started back in 1995. Took it to dealer who said they found a broken connector in the instrument cluster. They wanted over $350 to fix it, so... I kept hitting under the steering wheel. Took it to my mechanic not too long ago because it was buggin me. He looked and could not find a broken connector. He tightened all connections; added some grease for electrical connections or whatever that is, and it hasn't done it once since. It's been several months now.

I answered on just like this one about a month ago. What's happening is behind the instrument panel is a plug that likes to come undone. Remove the instrument cluster, clean the bulkhead connector and re-install.

The dash gauges, speedometer, tach, fuel, oil, battery and coolent will stop working but will come back sometime later,

i would 1st check the power distribution black box, located under the hood, on drivers side, there inside is several relays and fuses, look onto the inside of the cover ,once it is removed, most of thes would give you a basic description of the fuses and relays, i would check the one that controls instrument panel uses, hope that this was helpful to you.

1998 jeep cherokee, the airbag warning light periodically comes on while the speedometer drops to zero at the same time, lasts a few minutes then goes away, any ideas on the cause would be aappreciated

these jeeps are known for corrosion issues at the connector at the back of the instrument panel cluster causing the gauges to do odd things. if you remove the gauge pod assembly and undo the connector, check for any corrosion and clean as best as possible. fairly common issue. good luck!

1999 Cherokee, Changing out instrument cluster?

Unfortunately I believe this can not be done because the sensor for idiot lights are different from the sensors for gauges. I don't know this for an absolute fact but in most instances this is true.

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?
