Has anyone ever heard that if you put a new water heater on a chevy cavalier and the car has a timing belt you MUST change the belt or suffer with more problems
Your car does not have a timing belt it has a chain. but yes if the pump is driven by timing belt and it starts leaking the coolant gets on belt and it will fail. if your car has the 2.4 engine the water pump runs off of the timing chain and depending on mileage it would be smart to go ahead and replace it since it will be tore down anyway will save on labor

the 2.2 is a timing chain. If the cover on the front of the engine is metal it is almost always a timing chain. If it is plastic is always a timing belt.
Check timing belt. Remove the oil filler cap and look at the rocker arm. If you get someone to turn the engine while you watch and you see no movement... it's a broken belt. If you see movement, perhaps the belt has slipped. Replace belt and re time.
You need a 15mm socket and breaker bar to put the socket on in order to change the belt. put the socket on the bolt in the center of the belt tensioner and pull towards the front of the car. This takes tension off of the belt and allow it to be taken off. when you put the new belt on just ease the breaker bar back toward the rear of the car until it touches the belt and remove the socket. the tensioner will automaticly adjust its self.
Diagram should be under the hood
The auto tensioneris down low and dificult to get to.
If it has not been changed in a while you will need a long thin push stick and a serpentine tool.
Push on the belt hard at the auto adjuster and pop the belt off the smooth pully (located top).
hook up the serpentine belt tool and then mount the new belt
Notice: When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant
is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion
may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner-at
50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
