it could be that the tick over is two slow in brive,,,
set it up to tickover at 850,,950 rpm (in drive)
or it could be a gear box fult like the drive plate has a crack in it,,,letting the torque converter slap about,,,
chech tick over first,,, bont adjust tick over in gear unless the brakes are held hard on,,,
Firstly is it slow for reverse, reverse clutch also engages in 3rd gear however reverse has a boosted circuit (more psi) therefore will engage rev but not 3rd but it is a little slow for reverse. They do have a tendancy to pop a ball out of the High and reverse clutch giving this symptom.
Sounds like a pump issue, check line pressure. If it does have a bad trans pump it can be changed with out removing the trans. But also check the fluid level if you haven't already.
