Faulty right turn signal on 2002 Toyota Highlander

1) When I apply the brake on rear right amber signal light stays on steady and the brake lights turn off

2) with the brake off signaling a right turn causes the break light and amber signal light to flash alternately

3) when I signal a right turn and then press the brake the brake lights go off completely. The turn signal blinks feebly.

4) and strangely enough when I am in cruise control and turn on a right turn signal (without tapping the brake) the cruise control disengages.

Help. What should I do?

Does you vehicle have a trailer harness?

When the brake is applied the turn signals quit flashing, the parking lights will come on. I thought it might be the brake light switch but after changing it out the problem is still there

Trying to find the fuse location for the left rear brake lights

The entire brake light system has, at best, one fuse. In fact, the fuse that the brake light current flows through probably feeds more than just the brake lights.

If the same filament is used for brake light and turn signal, the power to the brake lights goes through the turn signal switch. When turning, the brake light power is disconnected from that light by the TS switch, and the flasher is connected to that light instead. So a bad TS Switch can fail to reconnect the brake light power to that light.

If there is a separate light or lens for the TS and the brake light, that doesn't apply.

2002 Toyota highlander passenger brake light not working

RE: 2002 Toyota Highlander 2.4cyl. 4X4 Base Model

I am a Certified Technician and have basic knowledge with electronics in electrical wiring. I searched the web and discovered this is a common problem.

I fixed the problem and it was a simple procedure... The problem is with the reverse light socket at the side with no brake light. This socket functions as a hub to direct current to the brake bulbs.

Remove reverse light socket and re-seat bulb. Check for loose or broken prongs. Replace if necessary.

Swap the reverse socket with the other side.

Occasionally the right turn signal light turns on when braking

Sound's like their is a problem with the right hand rear light cluster. The reason it only happen's going down a hill is you applying the brake. The only place the brake and indicator light's come together is the rear clusted. To check this apply the hand brake gently with the button held in instead of useing the foot brake. This may not be the fault but it is worth a try as it seems the most likely problem.
