SOURCE: 4x4 wont work in a 97 jeep

The only Solution to this is 1 of 2 Things ! The Shifter Linkage is Off of the Transfer Case 2 The Transfer Case is Shelled out and needs to be Rebuilt. Check underneath on the Transfer case for any Noises when in 4X4 and Check the Linkages. Please Rate my Response, I need all the Help That I can Get! Thanks!

SOURCE: 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4 wheel drive

I'm not absolutely sure on the tire size for the jeep itself, but I think they are 225/65/R15's. Not absolutely sure.

As for the noise, from your explanation, it sounds like the transfer case is under a heavy bind. Take it off of the road in some grass or dirt and then move it forward a few feet then simply hit reverse. Don't move much maybe an inch and it may release the bind. Once you get the bind off the transfer case, it should slip out of 4wd, unless there is damage in the case/shifter itself.

When operating four wheel drives, with tires of different sizes it causes extreme stress on the gearing in the transfer case. Larger tires don't turn the axles as much as smaller tires. So, this causes stress in the driveline as the front is actually turning slower then the rear. In turn, this will put so much pressure on the gears that it could cause damage and the shifting mechanism will not work correctly to pull it out of 4wd engagement.

Try those ideas, and see if you can get it out of 4WD. Definitely put four tires on the jeep that are all the same size. This will keep you from having excessive stress on the transfer case and gearing therein.

I hope this helps out buddy.

SOURCE: Service 4 Wheel Drive Switch

this seems to be because either the connection to the solenoid is loose or faulty or the solenoid is not activating. the transmission control module sends a signal to the solenoid to activate it. you get the light because the ecm detected that there is a a problem with the circuit. this is due to the fact that there is a voltage value to the solenoid and it is out of operating parameters

SOURCE: How to shift a 1998 jeep grand cherokee into 4 wheel drive

Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.

the first grand cherokee laredo was in 1992 . it was all jeep sports back then, the blocks are all the same .you will need to use some of the sensors from the old motor, the distributor and oil sending unit and temp sensor. will be no problem. if I can put a ford ranger motor in a mercury sable your swap is easier

4 wheel drive won't disengage

There can be a linkage adjustment problem. Also you may need to remove transfer case housing to check the spring inside. There is a chain inside. That one should be checked for its tension. If those are ok you may need your transfer case get serviced.

My 06 grand cherokee laredo has a 4x4 emblem on the vehicle, and a traction button on the dash, how do I operate the 4x4?

Your jeep should have full time four wheel drive. To place the transfer case in low range look down to the console towards the rear and you will see a "T" shaped handle. To place it into low range you should stop place the vehicle into park and lift the T handle and in the dash a 4X4 indicator lamp will light up. The traction button on the dash would be used in 4 wheel high mode when you start to experience wheel slippage upon take off from a stopped position. This will give you a little more control. You only need to use the low range for very slow speeds in mud or snow. Otherwise just leave it in high range because it is always using 4 wheel drive. This is a very reliable system which Jeep has refined over the years. Your Grand Cherokee is not designed fro hard core off road use. Hard core off road use will destroy the undercarriage. The Grand Cherokee is more of a luxury soccer mom 4X4 with good road manners, a comfortable ride, and good reliability.

How should the full-time and part-time 4 wheel drive be used on a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

Hi

Full time 4 wheel drive should be used on rugged and difficult to drive on terrain, this could include adverse weather such as deep snow, mudslides, sand dunes etc.

Part time would be used on terrain that is irregular where some parts of a track may be road and other parts rocky, mountainous regions combined with any of the above weather conditions. The 4 wheel drive should not be used for normal driving as it will only over time damage the gearbox, the 4 wheel system is not designed for speed but purely for grip and stability.

Hope this helps

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

I need to find out if I need to activate the 4 wheel drive for snow driving on the freeway. I have a 1986 Grand Cherokee. V8 5.2, with abs. There is a lever for lo/hi but I think that is used only for...

That is up to your preference in my opinion. 4 wheel may give you a little more traction, but it can also lead you into a false sense of security. If heavy snow, and you need to get through it, you can only go as fast as the guy ahead of you anyway right? Up here in Ontario Canada, I passed by many a 4 wheel drive in the ditch, because they assumed they would have a better chance on icy roads than me, with 2 wheel drive. Remember this, no matter what you decide, you may be able to go a little faster in 4 wheel, compared to 2 wheel, but when you have to hit the brakes, or go into a spin, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, your not going to be able to stop it any faster. Your going to use more gas in 4 wheel too. Yes there will be times when you need to use it, but like I said, when it goes sideways or you have to lock up the brakes, because you were pushing the envelope too much,? At least with 2 wheel, you feel the back end break loose, to warn you how slippery it is, and you may not feel that soon enough, with 4 wheel. Just my opinion, but maybe some 4 wheelers have a different opinion. It's just like the experts from the skid school said up here about mandatory snow tires being talked about. If putting snow tires on your car is going to make you drive a little faster, your defeating the purpose.
