Your website details problems with a 1999 Rav 4 gearbox slipping out of 5th gear. That is the identical problem I have with my Rav4. I also have occasional problems getting reverse gear but the remainder of the gears are o.k.
Can you please advise me how to solve this problem.
Thank you.
Gears slipping out of mesh indicates
1 ---not properly engaged on selection
2--- failing output shaft bearings
3-- worm slip joint bush in the extension housing not maintaining alignment of the output shaft
The gear engagement is by dog teeth in the synchro ring for 5th gear and if that connection alignment is not maintained exactly by bearings and bushes the dog teeth move out of engagement at each revolution
AS reverse gear operates through a moveable spur cut gear to engage the counter shaft and the out put shaft and you are having trouble with reverse as well , indicates the out put shaft rear bearing is suspect or is moving in the box housing

There is a TSB regarding this problem. It is very common. It requires replacing the synchro, hub fifth gear and bearing plate. It can be done with the trans in the vehicle and takes 2-3 hours.

in the front? They are in the most god awful tightest place to get to. its a 24mm drain plug and you cant fit anything in there, very difficult. I can show instruction, but I hope you have a lift.

There is a recall for the transmission that involves your exact problem. Call a dealer and see if your VIN is eligible for the recall. Check the NHTSA website for the exact details.

if it slips out of 5th on accelation ,chances are the phos bronze ring that guides it into mesh needs replacement, there is no point in just taking the thing apart and repairing same unless you can diy.can you not check out yellow pages for a gearbox reconditioner.....maybe cheaper.or you could hold the gearstick while you are accelerating???maybe not...
