Jeep Liberty - speed senser replaced - doesn't work

Jeep liberty - speedometer quit working. Senser shows
open so we replaced speed senser and no results.
Getting a P0501 reading.
Not ABS equipped.
Talked to mechanic at Jeep Dealership. He did
research and says they have no direction as it
should be working but Jeep only gives install on
ABS equipped. He said they have had this problem
too and have generally just started replacing parts
until it works.

Hi mstclair, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Trace the wire from the sensor to check for damage. Wires under the jeep can be damaged by debris or contact with exhaust.

SOURCE: 1997 buick lesabre has intermitant speedometer/odometer

Sounds as if it may be an instrument cluster issue. Check the plug at the cluster, if it is ok then travel to your nearest GM dealer and ask them to see if there is a software update addressing your issue. They will likely charge you a diagnostic fee, but it will be cheaper than throwing parts at it in the long run.

SOURCE: My speedometer on a 1997 Buick LeSabre works on

It maybe the speed sensor that sends the signal to the speedometer or the speedometer itself that's has a short in it.

Speedometer doesn't work on 2002 jeep liberty

If the speedometer does not work but the odometer does, the problem is in the speedo cluster. If neither work, it may be the speed sensor on the side of the transmission.

Speedometer not working on my 2002 jeep liberty.

The routing of the speed sensor wires is located on the rear differential. The problem is that they rub on the E-brake cable and once the wire is exposed they short and the speedometer and any other options running off the speed sensor quit working and that includes the transmission shift points and can cause the torque converter to not unlock and cause stalls. We went to a dealer and got the replacement kit for $32.00. He also took the time to encase the wires in a plastic tubing to avoid this problem again.

Speed sensor failed. can i replace it

Sure you can if a mechanic can do it so can you if you have the right tools and knowlege. First you need to know which one thers's one at each whell at the fround rear end housingf the rear rear end housing and the one in the side of the transfer case where the speedometer cable would'of connected on an older model and then theors three in the sides of the trans mission, Touque converter speed forward turbine speed output turbine speed. What proble are you trying to fix? the speedometer not working? Abs light on? Cheack engine light on? Cruise control not working? If the cruise control does work the speed senser is good and the check engine light will be on if the speed senser is'nt working. If the speed senser is'nt working the car will only take off in low and not shift to seecond or any higher gear as the computer doesn't know how fast the car is going. If the speedometer is'nt working and it does shift and cruise and the check engine light is'nt on then the speed senser is working but the speedometer is'nt if it is'nt and everything else is woring then as your driving hit the speedometer with your fist and see if it comes back on they can get stuck and i've fixed quite a few and they stayed fixed. On to wheel drive models with the rear wheels jacked off the ground safty I've run the car up to speed and trying wiggleing the wires and connectors till I wiggled the right thing till the speedometer came on ( including smacking the speedometer ) Just don't hit it too hard as it'll bust just like anything else.

The overhead console is stating that the tire sensor bad/ missing. How can I solve this?

Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure montioring system. The message is stating one of the sensers has a fault. This will require attention by either a reputable tire shop or chysler dealer. Senser replacement may be requried (about 150 installed). The senser is located inside the tire/wheel assembly. Hope this helps. Please leave feed back.

Need to know where all three speed sensors are on 04 Jeep Liberty. My speedometer has quit working - all other guages on dashboard work.

It is located on the rear diff. at the top. The cable for the parking brake crosses close by and messes up the wiring.

2002 jeep liberty speed sensor

Jeep Liberty 2002 woahs !
by porth21 - 2/1/09 7:35 AM In reply to: Jeep Liberty 2002 speedometer not working by Dannywon
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited with the same problem. The main problem I have found to be the routing of the speed sensor wires located on the rear difrential. They are 2 blue wires on my jeep and probably the same on yours. The problem is that they rub on the E-brake cable and once the wire is exposed they short and the speedometer and any other options running off they speed sensor quit working and that includes the tranny shift points and can cause the torque converter to not unlock and cause stalls. I am having the same problem for the third time and chrysler and jeep are both aware of the problem and unwilling to repair the problem or post a recall.
