Can anyone tell me if the 98 Ford Explorer transmission first gear and reverse share the same band??

I'm showing three bands in the parts book, overdrive, intermediate, and reverse. Nothing listed for first gear.
I can't say for certain first does not use the reverse band, but it is not listed that way in the book.

96 ford wont go into park, drive, or reverse unless in 4 wheel low

Is this a auto or Manual I ask as you say flywheel and all gears. tall us a little more. what is the gearbox ?. have you looked at the oil level and under it at the rear tail shaft, crosses. in 2 wheel drive and running can you get it into park. DON'T try to hard at this as it can damage the auto. If you can drive in 4 wheel low in all gears then it sounds like you may have a problem in the drive line. Tall us more

My 98 ford explorer won't go in reverse... it will drive forward and go into lower gear but not reverse...is this gonna be a big tranny job????

I know this sounds stupid but will it back up if you put it in 4wd low? If yes its a transfer case problem. If no, they the transmission will need rebuilt. Also can you push the vehicle forward or backward in park?

My 1999 ford explorer will not go into park;all other gears work

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission

98 Ford Explorer won't move in reverse

Sometimes it may just be the fluid level, if you have drive , drive it around the block a few times, then park it on level ground and hold the brake and go through all the gears slowley, two times. put it in park, open the hood and check the fluid level, the dip stick in the back by the fire wall, take it out and clean it, read the stick. SOME need to be checked in Nutral, if this is the case do so but be carefull that the truck has stopped moving when put in nutral!!! if it is low only put in the right fluid, and a little at a time, while it is still running DO NOT OVER FILL !!!!!!!! Also sometimes it is a SENSOR problem, and in most cases not to hard or costly to replace.
