Won't drive in reverse

Started backing out of a parking spot yesterday (turning and reversing) and my car made a grinding noise then stopped and would not go any further. Put it into drive and it clunked and grinded, but moved forward fine. Tried to reverse again and it did the same thing. I can maybe go 5 feet in reverse before it locks up. Drives forward fine, some light grinding noises when I turn. Car has 230,000 miles. Had transmission replaced 4 years ago. The four wheel drive indicator light is flashing, but it has been flashing on and off forever and we always assumed the censor was just messed up. Could this be a rear differential problem?

SOURCE: Transmission slipping making noise

If u keep it below 25 miles an hour you should make it, but this loud noise worries me, this noise means something is coming apart, if it does it may lock the trans up, so keep the speed down.

Yes , unfortunately The transmission does need service... My trans guy says he may be able to repair the trans and replace it...(R&R)... for about $600 , let me know how you wish to proceed.

SOURCE: Had new front brake pads and rotors installed last

First have the brakes checked, the abs and 4wd lights need to be checked, this is done with a scan tool, the computer stores codes telling you what part of what system has failed this will help in finding the problem, the noise my be a bad wheel bearing and has gotten bad to the point it has damaged the abs sensor and has made the lights come on , this is a guess you will need to have the computer scanned to get the codes. hope this helps, good luck.

No Reverse and the fluid is dirty and smells funny.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

Check the front engine mount..If its bad it could make a noise while turning or reverse..Hold the car in gear with your foot on the brake and carefully raise the engine ..do it in both reverse or forward and look for excessive movement..
