I bought the new ignition from junk yard the ignition was out of a chevy 2001 malibu my ignition first off messed up out of the blue by my key wouldn"t turn, so i switched the ignitions then when i thought ok here we go and tried to start it , that didnt happen all the lights displayed butthere was no cranking of the starter and the anti theft light came on in the car.
The ignition key contains a coded transponder chip which is read via an antenna around or close to the ignition/steering lock and the code in the key must match the code in the car's immobiliser memory in order to start the car.
As the key came from a different car it will need recoding. Sometimes the chip is moulded in plastic and sometimes it is possible to take the key apart - in that case you should be able to fit the chip (like a grain of rice) to your new key.
If you are lucky placing the original key close to the new key while trying to start might just make it work.

MAY BE YOU HAVE A DEFECTIVE KEY, CHECK IF THE KEY HAS A PELLET IN IT, IF SO THE KEY IS BAD AND YOUR DEALER CAN REPLACE IT.
THE PELLET IS A RESISTOR FOR THE ANTITHEFT.

leave the key on for about 5 to10 min then try to start. Are reset to computer by leaving the key on for 10 min and try to start the vehical.Do this procese 3 time then it shold reset

this is one way to reset it :
first make sure the battery is fully charged , then do the following:
key in the ignition but do not crank the motor, just leave it at the
ignition mode for ten minutes ,then turn it off POSITION for 5 seconds then REPEAT again 2 more times. at the 3 rd time youre gonna notice the ANTI THEFT light on dash to blink. when doing the last step , remove key , inserted again and turn on motor , good luck , AJ

My 2000 cavalier has done this for 6 months. You take your key out then open your door, wait ten minutes and the system resets itself and the car will start-annoying you bet!!!

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link.
