Question about 2004 Toyota ECHO
I had the alternator replaced the day before. When in low rev the car sounds like a Harley Davidson as it builds speed, but has very low power, once doing a good speed, the engine hums along with no problem....and the knocking which only rattles at the beginning of driving off from idle, sounds like a hollow weight hanging loosely

It could be the exhaust manifold that is a common problem or a blocked resonator or muffler. good luck

check for vacume leaks listen for a hissing sound if you here one but cant pin point it you can use a spray bottle of gas of can of ether both very flamable so be gentle and spray around the sound when the engine revs up theres your leak thats where i would start

Your harmonic ballancer is shot.
With the engine off , key out of the ignition... grasp the belt that goes down to the engine crank and see if you can make it turn a little ... if you can , you will see that the outside of that bottom most pully turns ... while the crank does not...
Replace the harmonic ballancer with a new unit... ( used ones are 90% junk by the time you get em from a bone yard...)
There is a cut out on the passangers side to access the bolt you need to take out... it is behind the tire , so the tire must be removed to access it...
easy fix ya !
