Check immobilizer. It may not recognize that key anymore. Get your spare key and try starting with it.

Do the gauges and warning lights work with key on? If not, check fusible links, AM1 for ignition key power. If the gauges/warning lights work, the key switch has power, so you can follow it to the starter solenoid. The start wire out of the ignition switch is a black/white wire, this is the hot wire to the solenoid, and only has power when key is held in start. With automatics, there is only one switch-a neutral start switch- between the ignition switch and the solenoid on the starter .

With a manual transmission, the black-white start wire goes to both a starter relay and a clutch start switch (on the clutch pedal), those two work together to send the power on to the starter solenoid. So, no crank, good battery, power to key, follow the black/white wire, the start relay and the clutch switch, to the starter solenoid- a hot wire there turns the starter motor on.

2005 GMC Envoy XL. Will not engage starter. Like something electrical. Turn key and nothing. Worked fine until now.

Could be the neutral safety switch if it won't crank in neutral or park, could also be the starter has failed.

I really think you have some other problem going on that you think is the starter. Maybe a starter relay. Does it just not start when it is warm and after it sits it starts? Does you remote starter switch bypass the key switch and go straight to the starter and then it aways cranks over. That would indicate to me that something is either wrong with the key switch or wiring to the starter relay or solenoid.

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

If you starting system was working perfectly it would start when you turn the key. If it starts when you push start it you probably have a bad starter motor/solenoid.

sounds like a starter. if possible without getting hurt maimed or mutilated, try tapping on the starter (best done with a rod standing beside the car) while someone holds the key in the start position. if car starts (works about 50% of the time) it's the starter. otherwise, if all lites come on, radio works, etc but nothing when you turn the key, replace the starter

Check the start solenoid, starter side, when you turn the key... The battery side will always be hot, the starter side should be hot when you turn the key.
