It is recommended to replace the bolts for head gasket jobs, engine jobs ect. Its no necessary to replace for valve cover gaskets,(smaller gasket jobs)

Hi Dee Dee, you have a very messy job ahead of you, in Australia GM did away with drain plugs in the transmissions, Start with a service kit, this is a sump gasket and oil filter, you have to loosen the sump bolts starting from 1 corner, allow 1 corner or the sump to come down this will control where the oil comes out of the sump making it easier to catch the old oil, less mess, when oil is finished draining remove the remaining bolts and remove pan, At this point it is advisable to change the filter (hence the kit) because you must replace the sump gasket

I am changeing the head gasket on my thunderbird 2.3 turbo it had a bad oil leak. do i have to have my head milled or resurfaced?.

YES ! Since you're making all the effort and doing all of this work, I myeself would go ahead and send the head in to get a valve job as well since it's going to be at the maching shop anyhow. Bite the bullet and go ahead and spend the money and do it the right way since the head is off and there. Just my opinion but have been twisting wrenches for 25 plus years.

you have to do ahead gasket job again you need new gaskets and you have to resurface the heads to make sure their not warped or crack

It is more than likely your valve cover gasket. I am assuming you have the 3.1 engine in your venture and Chevrolet was notorious about having faulty valve cover gaskets. However, the replacement gasket is metal and will not crack apart like the one that came out in your engine. You will have to have a dealership or a mechanic fix the problem for you. I had the same problem as you are having and it was the valve cover gasket. It should cost around $600 to fix.

It would probably be beneficial to go ahead and replace the head gasket as well since they will have the engine apart anyway. It is better to go ahead and do it when you are replacing the valve cover gasket than to wait and if something were to happen and the head gasket go out. Then you will have to pay to have another valve cover gasket put on as well. Hope this helps.

Honestly, I've never heard of such a thing. If the gaskets are replaced and the engine is cleaned out and the fluids are changed, there shouldnt be any long term problems. If theres no damage now, there wont be any after its fixed. I would highly recommend getting a second opinion before you commit to anything. A small piece of advise though, if you decide to replace the intake gaskets, you may want to go ahead and replace the head gaskets as well. It's not much extra work to do it once the intake is off, and you wont have to worry about a head gasket letting go after everything else is done.

Hello. Let me try to assist you the best I can, with the hope of achieving a FixYa rating from you for my assistance.

Changing the rear valve cover gasket on your vehicle would be not considered a "real" big job, but IS a time-consuming job.
In order to remove the rear cover, you first have to remove the intake plenum. If you do not remove the plenum, you can't get to the valve cover bolts that are under the plenum. After the plenum is off, the valve cover is easy to access. You will also need to replace the intake plenum gasket, if you do the job yourself.

too long to explain in this tiny box go ahead and buy yourself a factory (preferred) or Chilton's manual , i would give the job a 8-9 on the 1-10 scale because there are some critical points that need to be addressed or you could be looking at engine damage or untimely failures please rate -jeff
