1997 Mercury Sable will not shift into overdrive

Car has 106k mileage. In winter it will not shift into overdrive until engine warms up, then it sometimes it will shift up and down a few times before it stabilizes. In summer it shifts fine when engine is cold, but (especially on a real hot day) after running for a couple of hours (I deliver mail, lot of stop and go) it will not shift into overdrive and sometimes downshifts hard and does not pick up quickly from dead start. This usually only lasts for a few minutes and then it works fine. Other than these instances the trans works fine and shifts very smoothly. Electronic problem? It seems like if there was a mechanical problem it would not shift properly at all. Help!

Speed sensor issues error code P0500

sounds like a transmission issue could need a transmission fluid flush then you should be fine the first indicator that your transmission is going bad is the first gear and reverse but since its overdrive probably just a tranny fluid issue hope that helps

95' Mercury Sable 3.0w/overdrive auto trans when car reaches operating temp trans will shift fine until it shifts for third or o/d then completely disengages will not reengage until car slows and down...

Sounds like a shift solenoid problem. If you have any codes associated with solenoid failure, that is probably what it is. If there are no codes, it is probably something stuck in the valve body or something else mechanical.

1997 mercury sable won't shift into overdrive. We think we may need to replace the transmission. If so, what vehicle transmissions will work in a sable?

first of all, check the kickdown cable to transmission. it may be out of adjustment. or just bad.if its the cable out of adjustment, it is sure cheaper then a tranny.

The Car wants to stall and die at start up until it warms up a bit. I have to drop into low gear and manually have to shift until it hits that warm up point

you need to have the Engine Coolant Temperature switch checked, since the computer relies solely on sensors, the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

1997 cavalier/tranny shifts in and out of overdrive

It is likely you lock-up converter. Try using Lube-gard trans additive for converter shutter. I know O'reilly's has it.

Overdrive not shifting correctly

Not sure on yours but on my vehicle, it doesn't shift up until engine reaches a certain temerature, and right now in the winter weather it takes a little longer. On mine it's normal.
