If you have positive battery cable that is shorted, fix it. A dead short to ground should smoke it or get very hot. Check ground, also.
Use a test lite, ignition bat fuse 1 and 2, underhood fuse block, Should be hot all the time. Voltage and ground, both, are important.

SOURCE: 99 cavalier Smoke coming out from under dashboard!

now this may be a long shot... but i had a similar problem on my cutlass. but it wasnt wiring...... it was from the tube running from the head of my engine...... the smell and smoke were coming from hot oil coming out of the crank case vent tube and then being sucked into the air inlet for the heater/ ac.

since a electrical wire's protective cover is petroleum based as is oil.... they smell very similar

SOURCE: lost all power all of a sudden 1977 corvette

do you know what fuse links are,and what they look like? usually down at the starter, the 2 or 3 hot wires besides the main battery cable all connect they feed the power to the fuse box, ignition and accessories, they have black square rubber blocks on them usually 3 or 4 inches from the starter they are built in fuses in the wires themselves check continuity throught them,if you already know about them ,the head light switch and the ignition switch are the first place i would look ,especially if they are original

Hi, I have pasted your circuit below, and I have circled the part of the switch that is failing. It is possible that the white wire from the brake light switch to the multi-function switch is broken. Check that wire for power when the brake is depressed (you have to take the column apart to check the switch).
If the switch is bad, you can get one for only $120 on ebay here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-01-02-03-04-05-IMPALA-TURN-SIGNAL-SWITCH-CRUISE-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZalgoQ3dSIQ26itsQ3dIQ26ituQ3dUCIQ252BUAQ252BFICSQ26otnQ3d20Q26pmodQ3d360274012230Q26psQ3d54QQ_trksidZp3284Q2em263QQitemZ270622890392

To check the switch, you will need to disassemble the steering column. This requires a steering wheel puller, which you could probably borrow or purchase for about $10-15. I can send the full instructions for testing/replacing the switch if you would like to try.

try this.. disconnect the vehicle battery entirely, connect a 10 amp battery charger to the car connectors matching the terminal leads..and power the car with the charger..you should hear a hum or buzz in whichever relay or circuit breaker is bad.. replace this relay and the lights and stuff should work..the charger will not direct-short but the guage may go full over indicating a malfunction..or extreme load.. maybe a window switch might be fried..you should be able to hear any issues as long as power is coming from the charger only...repost findings..

The radio won't turn on in my 2004 dodge neon

Has any work been done under the dash. Sounds like you have wire grounded to radio or something else the fuse sends power to.
Maybe you could unhook hot wire to radio. if fuse blows again you know it is not the radio.

The radio won't turn on in my 2004 dodge neon

you might have a short on th eback of your fuse box.. if not tthen I would start by disconnecting the power wire to the radio. (as near the fuse box as possible maybe even the ground wire too (although it will still ground through the antenna). if the radio will work independently of the fuse box (still with a fuse in the line always fuse any electrical device in the wire route) then you know the radio isn't the problem and thus it is a wire that deals with the radio via the car. .you have to be careful that you don't damage the computer while blowing fuses. if it's the radio then off to the pick a part junk yard..

I have a ford windstar 2000 LX and it won't start! Please help me!!

Hi,
Ok first you need to make sure that the battery was put back in correctly. Positive terminal to positive battery cable. Then if that is correct, check the main fuse's right next to the battery area, they are large and square ensure non of these are broken, or fused.Check all the fuse's in the other fuse box in the engine bay area and also inside the vehicle.
Let me know how you get on.
Thanks

I have a 99 ram 4x4 slt laramie dome lights cargo light and map lights dont work, replaced #12 fuse 10amp under the black fuse keeper thingy on the drivers side but it keeps blowing it some times it lasts...

Classic symptoms of a frayed wire carrying current somewhere in the circuit, but touching metal, bare metal against bare hot wire: instant SHORT! Maybe a little spark there. Fortunately for you, you have a 10 amp fuse in that circuit which blows, and keeps the wiring from melting, and maybe starting a fire somewhere in your vehicle. If the fuse doesn't blow right away, the bare wire has moved away from contact with metal, but eventually, with enough movement it gets back into position and shorts again.
Enlightening, but not very helpful, eh? I'm afraid that's the way it is, Richard. Shorts like that can be very difficult to trace and find, without time and patience, a decent understanding of auto electrical systems, a wiring diagram for your Laramie, and knowing just what circuits that fuse protects.
If you have the owner's manual, it should list the circuits for that #12 fuse. I'd start with the dome lights, and remember, the door switches are part of that circuit. Good luck.

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring Convertible and for some reason I keep blowing a fuse. Or I have a short circuit some where that is blowing the fuse. Monday morning it wouldn't start. Tuesday at the...

To find out what circuit is drawing down the battery, Remove all the fuses making sure you mark where they come from. Disconnect the positive lead on the battery. Put one fuse in at a time. Then after each fuse put the positive cable to the post. If it sparks, you have found the draw. That will at lest identify the circuit. Then you can look into that circuit or bring it to the repair shop knowing what is drawing it down.

what do you mean by "dash lights"? how do you KNOW the pump isnt working? how do you KNOW its good? at the ignition switch the ORANGE and PINK should have power in the RUN position the BROWN and TAN/WHITE should also be HOT in the run position. There should be a red wire near the fuel pump relay, make sure its HOT when cranking. IF its HOT and the fuel pump doenst run, the pump is bad. You can also put 12V on that red wire and power the pump.
