It is located under the coolant reservoir. Remove nut and ground cable (not required, but easier access), then 2 bolts . pull relay down and remove 2 plugs from bottom of relay. Make sure and clean plugs and relay receptacles with contact cleaner and dry before reinstalling.

Hi - I don't know the answer off hand but there is just a chance you could do a Sherlock Holmes job yourself, because many of the relays have unique pin layouts and cannot fit into the wrong place. The numbers may be misleading - on my Sharan some of the relays have numbers which are sideways or upside down when correctly installed! If you find that one relay will go into more than one socket, or more than one relay will go into one socket then you will need further help, but if there is, say, a five pin relay and only one five pin socket, it's got to be right, hasn't it?

they will only fit in there one or two ways just match em up to there spot on the board, most of them are the same relay anyway -jeff

Check for a switch at lower part of rad. Should see a wire harness & plug on a sensor at bottom of rad. This sensor/switch also operates fan on/off according to coolant temperature. You may need to disconnect battery to get at it safely.

They are in the fusebox under the driver's side dash, above the fuses, usually 2-3 rows of relays.

Cooling fan relay

obviously you have met an idiot and believe me there is plenty of them out here. your cooking fan relay is something you can buy from the dealer and not the auto parts store.
what you can do is go to the auto parts store and buy the technical manual and once you find out the location of the cooling fan relay just go to a local salvage yard or a u-pull-it yard and most like it will cost you $1 and all you have to do is just find a VW or a similar model to it within a 2 year difference and just pull it out and you will save at least $20-$30.

Cooling fans will not come on

Hi,

Fan Relay switch is stuck open. This of course assumes your temperature sensor is working appropriately. Which I assumed since you seem to know that the engine is running hot.

Replace the fan relay switch. The relay switch is tripped when the temperature sensor tells the computer the engine is too hot.

Until you get the relay switch replaced, you can either by-pass the relay switch and directly connect the fans to the battery, or turn on your A/C ALL the time and use it at a minimum setting. This will keep the cooling fans running at all times.

Locate your rad fan relay, and next time it does it, give it a quick rap with handle of screwdriver or similar weapon. If it stops, replace relay.

Fans always running on my VW Jetta 1995 2.0. It doesn't matter if I start up cold engine or not. I checked sensor by unpluging them one by one but fans were still running. I found only one way to stop them...

Sounds like your fan relay may be bad. There should be a power control center underneath the hood. Locations of the relays should be underneath the cover. You can take the relay to an auto parts store and they should be able to check it. If not. the relays should be about 6-12 $

Electric fan motor not coming on.

Fan relay, its usually located near the fan shroud or rad saddle. Check your owners manual for exact location for your model or call VW and speak with a mechanic to find the location. Sounds like the relay is burned out. A relay for that is like 5 bucks and just plugs in like a fuse simple to replace.
