Car has been driving fine, then today returning home stopped at traffic lights as i set off there was little power then started to chug, I pulled over just as it cut out, now can restart but cuts out within 2 seconds or chugs for a few secs then cuts out. there is nearly half a tank of petrol in it. I do think it hasd been using a lot more petrol than normal and if dormant at traffic lights car feels like it is chugging a bit, but been like that since i bought it.

is there a particular time or distance travelled before fault occurs?how is the temperature on the gauge at the time of fault?this info and what you have described is invaluable to a technician.may be related to airflow sensor/metering.temperature or map sensor etc,or maybe as simple as the sparkplugs are worn and need replacing, air filter clogged etc.would be good for them to check basics and perhaps check for fault code logging on ecu.just remember that just because a sensor code is logged,it doesnt necessarily mean that it is faulty, but possibly caused by another factor

Hi get the coil pack checked, most likely the cause has the engine got wet at all?

Not to scare or offend you but it could be many many things. It does help that the check engine light is on, though.
If you can go to a place like Autozone, where they check your check engine light for free, and post what the code was, I can give you a place to start.
I do not mind helping you further with a proper diagnosis procedure either, if you can share your vehicle information.

Sounds like a MAF(Mass air flow sensor, you can start by pulling it out, it's inside the intake box on this car. You can clean it with a high percentage isopropl alcohal or MAF cleaner, this sounds to be the problem, if it is really bad, you can unplug it temporarily, it will not have as much power but it will run better. If cleaning it doesn't fix it, then you will need to replace it, ensure not to touch the sensor itself at all.
