Question about 2000 Jeep Cherokee
My battery died over night (dome light i think) and when i got it jumped with a jump kit, it will turn over, but the engine will only run if i have the gas pedal to the floor. if i let off at all the engine stalls out. as soon as the jump kit is taken off it is completely dead again (can't even use power locks). I called a garage about getting it looked at and they said over $300 to get it towed and a diagnostic test run :( Could it just be that my battery is so dead? I have had no problems with rpm, fuel, etc until I went to start it yesterday morning and the battery was dead. I also just put gas in it the night before it died..could I have gotten bad gas or water in the line somehow? 4.0L V6 178,000miles
The battery is dead, you know that. (and may be bad)
why, is the only issue.
if lucky just its no good, now, the love to go totally dead after being
totally discharged, like that.
we use charger to see if it has hope, if not a new battery now.
when started was the charge /battery lamp off?
why not take the battery to walfart and exhange it. for new.
take it home and now it starts.
then see if the battery works and holds charge,
charge lamp in cluster out.
or use voltmeter see 13.3. to 15vdc, normal alternator power.
a bad battery (shorted) can cause the altenator to shut down
so, only good battery there is best practices, or go crazy.
right now,im trying to bet my boat trolling battery back to life.
but is hopeless......
if you had a battery charger in your shop
you;'d already know, battery good/bad.

A new battery is a lot less expensive than a big tow bill, for sure. . that is how I would approach the problem

Try replacing the Oxygen Sensors... I had the same problem and replaced my Oxygen Sensors and I haven't had any problems since.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)

Ive had this similar problem in the past with my 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee. Ive found by putting the Jeep in neutral ...it started right away. Good luck

Check the ignition coil packs. It sounds like a spark problem.
