I have a 1997 bmw 318i that is overheating and the fan wont engage and steam/mist/smoke is coming from the back of the engine compartment. I replaced the thermostat, what else could the problem be?

now it needs to be pressure tested for an internal or external coolant leak. If the water level keeps dropping in an engine the coolant temp sensor will never tell the computer when to turn the fan on. was the air ever purged out of the cooling system? Because, the temp sensor will never get a reading if coolant levels are low and will never tell the computer when to engage the fan. Does the A\C work? Does the fan come on for the A\C?

Radiator fan running from enging start to stop.

Either the fan switch on the engine or the fan relay is at fault. Replace both for they are inexpensive to replace

I own a 1993 BMW 318i and the fan in the front of

I assume you mean the radiator fan. This might be indicative of a different problem. The main issue is, does the car overheat? If not, then it's probably a thermostat that's stuck open. A lot of things can fail in the fan system...the fan motor itself, a fuse, a relay, or the temperature sensor that tells the fan to turn on.

Yes pull the cooling fan relay in the fuse panel. It might be bad.

Where is the auxillary fan fuse located on 1997 bmw 318i?

Auxiliary Cooling Fan Circuit Fuses
Fuse 16 is 5 amps located in front power distribution box under hood, drivers side near rear of engine compartment.

Fuse 41 (ex. M44 w/man. trans) is 30 amp (probably not your car) in front power distribution box

Fuse 48 (M44 w/man. trans only) is 40 amp (The auxiliary fuse box in trunk for E36 is on the right side of trunk behind the trim panel.)

Cooling fan

'tis the season. Check the fuses to see if they are good. You may need to wiggle them a bit and if they are the old style with the exposed metal strip, check closely for small cracks. If the fuse is good and the contacts are not corroded, it may be the resistor.

This assumes that the blower is not moving any air at all. If the problem is the air won't blow through certain vents, that's a vacuum line problem.

1998 bmw 318i. aux cooling fan does not run. Causing motor to run hot.

check the relay, most probably under the hood, and check the fuse, most probably under the steering wheel near pedals. If u have two fans, most times the 2nd fan is driven by a strap from hte 1st motor, if so, check to see if its broken. If it does need a strap, should turn freely by hand since it has no motor or strap.

sounds like the resistor in the side of the blower unit has failed. try replacing that.
